Ionogel

A 20 mM solution of the Step 3 product in acetonitrile and A-methyl-A -methoxy-methyl-imidazolium bromide was prepared. The mixture was heated and left to stand at ambient temperature for 30 minutes. An organogel and ionogel formed that were observed using a dark-field optical microscope. The organogel indicated the presence of microcrystals suggesting that they have an associated fibrous structure or that crystals were formed by the slide cover glass the micron-level fibrous structures were not observed in the ionogel.

In this chapter we introduced molecular self-assembly, which is becoming growing research area in the chemistry of ionic liquids. In the same publication, the Bliimel group also explored the structure of imidazolium ILs that have been immobilized on silica [11]. By applying II and 13C HRMAS NMR it could be demonstrated that the imidazolium moiety stays largely intact. Likewise, Le Bideau et al. used II MAS NMR to investigate the structural properties of [bmim] BF4 being confined in monolithic silica ionogels [12], Much to surprise, the IL showed only slightly slower dynamics compared with neat liquid [bmim]BF4 the IL s liquid-like properties seemed to be preserved in the confined state.

The phenomenon of melting point depression was not only investigated with ionogel systems but also with SILP systems that were prepared by a standard procedure according to the hterature [8]. The use of controlled pore glass (CPG) as support shows impressively the melting point depression of ILs in confinement (9).
