More than three decades of research have shown convincingly that this on-site approach is cost effective, primarily because behavior-change techniques are straightforward and relatively easy to administer and because intervention progress can be readily monitored by the ongoing observation of target behaviors. By obtaining objective feedback on the impact of intervention techniques, a behavior-based process can be continually refined or altered. 

There are multiple mechanisms known to underlie the neuronal cell damage associated with injury or disease that at least theoretically could be targeted for pharmaceutical intervention. Currently however, there is no clinically available therapeutic agent that can reliably protect the brain from progressive neurodegenerative processes for sustained periods. Due to the extensive amount of preclinical research that has been conducted in recent years, there is a basis for optimism, however, it appears likely that some of these approaches will result in clinically effective therapeutic modalities in the near future. A short overview of some of the investigational approaches to combat neurodegeneration appears below. 

Expected outcomes define the expected behavior of the patient or family that indicates that the problem is being resolved or that progress toward resolution is occurring. Expected outcomes serve as a basis for evaluating the effectiveness of nursing interventions. For example, if the nursing intervention is to monitor the blood pressure every hour, the expected outcome is that the patient experiences no further elevation in blood pressure ... 

Env sequences both temporally and between patients. Two drugs that target HIV-1 entry, enfuvirtide and maraviroc, are now licensed for treatment of HIV-1 infection. The efficacy of these drugs validates entry as a point of intervention in viral hfe cycles and, in the context of HIV treatment, contributes to the growing armamentarium of antivirals which, in multidrug combinations, can effectively inhibit viral replication and prevent disease progression. 

The proceeding chapters give wimess of an overwhelming scientific development. Antiviral intervention has become a standard, and the worldwide availability of this innovation is perceived as a humanitarian matter of course with a value of its own. However, such an important therapy progress has to be seen in competition with other allocations of scarce funds. Health care resources are Umited - in one country more than in another, but in principle funds invested to antiretroviral intervention will not be available for prevention of HIV/AIDS or for the cure of other diseases. This fundamental scarcity calls for a rational utilization of existing resources and a scientific calculation of the socio-economic impact of antiretroviral intervention. 

Most CF patients have an increased caloric need due to increased energy expenditure through increased work of breathing and increased basal metabolism. Prevention of malnutrition requires early nutritional intervention. In patients with mild lung disease and well-controlled absorption, required caloric intake is approximately 100% to 120% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for age.15 As lung disease progresses, caloric requirements increase. 

What other interventions are appropriate to minimize the progression of CKD ... 

The primary goal is to slow and prevent the progression of CKD. This requires early identification of patients at risk for CKD to initiate interventions early in the course of the disease.

It is likely that the dynamic factor may predominate as the cause of symptoms in these patients. In contrast, drug treatment failures after an initial good response to drug therapy will likely be an indication of progressive BPH disease. In such patients, surgical intervention may be indicated.
