Alpha parameter

DR. MARSHALL NEWTON (Brookhaven National Laboratory) I d like to ask a question about Hopfield s numbers. The alpha parameter from his 1974 paper [Hopfield, J. J. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci., USA 1974, 7 1, 3640] was based not on the direct metal-metal interaction but rather was based on carbon-carbon overlap because it was two carbons which were closest together in his electron transport system. In contrast, Dr. Sutin gave some different numbers based on metal orbitals. Depending on whether one is interested in carbon-carbon overlap between two organic rings, or in direct metal-metal overlap, one might or might not opt for the Hopfield parameters. However, at the level of fuzziness which we have, it may not make any difference, I realize. [Pg.250]

These we call the alpha parameters, and they are analogous to those used to characterize adaptors in wave digital filters [Fettweis, 1986], For unloaded junctions, the alpha... [Pg.240]

The alpha parameters provide an interesting and useful parametrization of waveguide junctions. They are explicitly the coefficients of the incoming traveling waves needed to compute junction velocity for a series junction (or junction force or pressure at a parallel junction), and losslessness is assured provided only that the alpha parameters be nonnegative and sum to 2. Having them sum to something less than 2 simulates a resistive load at the junction. [Pg.240]

IV) Residual background suppression. The residual background has been evaluated with two different methods the Alpha fit and the Ring method. 1) Alpha method the distribution of the Alpha parameter has been fitted with a second order polynomial, without the linear term, between 20 and 80 0 (where only background is present). Then the fit extrapolation to the 0-12.5° region... [Pg.288]

Copolyesters of 3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB) and 3-hydroxyvalerate (3HV) were produced by Burkholderia cepacia D1 at 30 °C in nitrogen-free culture media containing n-butyric acid and/or n-valeric acid [115]. When n-valeric acid was used as the sole carbon source, the 3HV fraction in copolyester increased from 36 to 90 mol% as the concentration of n-valeric acid in the culture medium was increased from 1 to 20 g/1. The addition of n-butyric acid to the culture solution resulted in a decrease in the 3HV fraction in copolyester. The copolymers biosynthesized by this method were mixtures of random copolymers having a wide variety of composition of the 3HV component. The melting points of the fractionated copolymers show a concave curve with the minimum at the 3HV content of approximately 40 mol%. The alpha-parameter of lattice indices of the PHB crystal for the fractionated copolymers largely increased as the 3HV composition increased. Biodegradability of the copolymer increased with the lower content of 3HV composition and/or the lower crystallinity. [Pg.243]

The constant, K, depends on the target material, particle abrasiveness, and size distribution of the particles. The kinetic energy of the particles is Mp x Vp + 2. This parameter includes the solids loading, or concentration, and velocity of the particle. Alpha is the angle of impingement of the particle on the blade surface. [Pg.248]

QUESTION Do you get bigger effects on some of the behavioral parameters after the amphetamine treatments if you pretreat the animals with a low dose of alpha methyltyrosine during that period, during the postamphetamine period In the old days, when we had a partial lesion, we gave a low dose of AMFT, and it would reexpose the lesion. Have you tried that ... [Pg.154]

The ionic charge, diffusivity, and electrical mobility associated with these small radioactive particles are three parameters controlling plateout. A particle can acquire an electrical charge by a number of mechanisms which promote the transfer of electrons to and from the particle surface, therefore producing a negatively and positively charged particle, respectively. With the decay of Rn-222, an alpha particle and Po-218 are formed. As these... [Pg.360]

A development of the moving die rheometer where the operation of the unit is fully computer controlled. The rate of oscillation, temperature and level of strain can all be run through a series of options. The torque measurements are also highly sophisticated. As a consequence, the unit can be set up to monitor processing parameters, then the cure behaviour and finally the finished dynamic properties of the cured material. It is manufactured by Alpha Technologies. [Pg.55]

ALPHA BF (days) Baseflow alpha factor. The baseflow recession constant is a direct index of groundwater flow response to changes in recharge. This parameter can vary between 0 and 1, with values in the range 0.1-0.3 for a land with slow response to recharge, and 0.9-1.0 for a land with a rapid response. [Pg.65]

Abstract The equation of state (EOS) of nuclear matter at finite temperature and density with various proton fractions is considered, in particular the region of medium excitation energy given by the temperature range T < 30 MeV and the baryon density range ps < 1014 2 g/cm3. In this region, in addition to the mean-field effects the formation of few-body correlations, in particular light bound clusters up to the alpha-particle (1 < A < 4) has been taken into account. The calculation is based on the relativistic mean field theory with the parameter set TM1. We show results for different values for the asymmetry parameter, and (3 equilibrium is considered as a special case. [Pg.75]
