Big ships are related to building with respect to their dimensions and construction. Their fire protection concepts are therefore rather similar to those of buildings. For ocean liners, the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO) issued the regulations International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). Chapter II-2 covers the fire protection prescriptions. As for buildings, ships are also divided into fire sectors and fire resistance is codified for particular structural components.
