Intensities under pressure

The measurement of a lifetime is much more accurate and reliable than the measurement of the absolute luminescence intensity under pressure. Therefore, the majority of studies on f-element compounds reported on pressure-dependent lifetimes only. The compounds studied so far can be found in table 1. In most cases a decrease of the lifetime under pressure has been observed. The following sections will treat the changes in lifetimes or intensities according to the mechanisms responsible for the observed variations. [Pg.563]

The plate and frame press is a type of pressure filter (Figure 4.6). Filter plates are held within a frame and slurry is pumped under pressure into the spaees between sueeessive plates. As filtration proeeeds filter eake builds up and the pressure drop inereases, finally reaehing the limit of the pump. Eventually, the plate spaees beeome filled with eake and the plates are released in the frame and the eake diseharged. A wash eyele may also be introdueed to remove liquor held up in the filter eake. The operation is thus essentially bateh-wise and ean be labour intensive. [Pg.88]

On the other hand, turbulence may also be generated by external sources. For example, fuels are often stored in vessels under pressure. In the event of a total vessel failure, the liquid will flash to vapor, expanding rapidly and producing fast, turbulent mixing. Should a small leak occur, fuel will be released as a high-velocity, turbulent jet in which the fuel is rapidly mixed with air. If such an intensely turbulent fuel-air mixture is ignited, explosive combustion and blast can result. [Pg.133]

In a number of cases, the temperature of the filament and thermodynamic parameters allow one to calculate [9] the flux intensity of free atoms produced in dissociation of molecules. Specifically, in the case of dissociation of hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen molecules on hot metal filaments under pressures of molecular gases higher than lO" Torr, the flux intensity of atoms A originating from A2 molecules is given by... [Pg.222]

Crystal structure determinations from very small samples have become possible due to the high intensities of the X-rays from a synchrotron. Very high pressures can be exerted on a small sample situated between two anvils made from diamond. In this way, our knowledge of the behavior of matter under high pressures has been widened considerably. Under pressure the elements of the fifth and sixth main groups exhibit rather unusual structures. A synopsis of the structures that occur is given in Fig. 11.9. [Pg.111]

In the extruder the flour and water will be subjected to intense agitation and will be heated to above 100°C under pressure. Extruders are constructed to work at elevated pressures, indeed the barrel of the extruder is constructed in the same way as a gun barrel. Under these conditions the starch will gelatinise but the water cannot boil because the high pressure elevates the boiling point. [Pg.67]

The alkylation of toluene with acetylene in the presence of sulphuric acid is carried out in a batch reactor. 6000 kg of toluene is charged in each batch, together with the required amount of sulphuric acid and the acetylene is fed continuously to the reactor under pressure. Under circumstances of intense agitation, it may be assumed that the liquid is always saturated with acetylene, and that the toluene is consumed in a simple pseudo first-order reaction with a rate constant of 0.0011 s-1. [Pg.254]

Interestingly, vz(Fz) does not spht when KMn04 is measured in the infra-red under pressure, while the deformation vibrations, Vi(p2), split into three bands (217). Under normal pressure only two bands are observed. The intensity of the bands at higher frequencies decreases with increasing pressure. The band... [Pg.104]

Many heterocyclic compounds are biosynthesized by plants and animals and are biologically active. Over millions of years these organisms have been under intense evolutionary pressure, and their metabolites may be used to advantage for example, as toxins to ward off predators, or as colouring agents to attract mates or pollinating insects. Some heterocycles are fundamental to life, such as haem derivatives in blood and the... [Pg.4]

In view of the increase of the copper number it may be concluded that the substance undergoes strong hydrolysis and oxidation in the course of the treatment with alkali. Operations of this kind should therefore be performed with great care, since the over intensive action of these reagents and the appreciable fall in viscosity that ensues cause the gel formed after evaporation of the solvent to become brittle. In recent times therefore stabilization boiling under pressure has been widely applied. [Pg.273]

These results also support the theoretical explanation of the synthesis of titanium nitride and aluminum nitride given above. They show that metal chlorides can be decomposed and metals deposited in the intense low pressure plasma under similar conditions as those employed for the synthesis of nitrides. The interpretation of the experimental results given in Ref.33 can now be considered as the initial step in the development of the ideas presented in this review (see also30 ). [Pg.156]
