Instruction and information

The devices must be designed, manufactured and packed in such a way that their characteristics and performances during their intended use will not be adversely affected during transport and storage, taking account of the instructions and information provided by the manufacturer. 

Instructions and information should be collected and stored in a place easily accessible at the workplace. 

Intended purpose represents the use for which a product, process or service is intended according to the specifications, instructions and information provided by the manufacturer [3]. Hazards that arise from system operation essentially fall into two categories those hazards that occur when the system is being used in the way in which it was intended and those which occur only when it is used outside of that intention. Section 9.4 discusses the practicalities of assessing hazards that arise from system misuse. However, one can only place hazards in this category after the system s intended purpose has been clearly defined. 

Operating and maintenance procedures should tell the technicians how to run the facility for which they are responsible—no more, no less. In practice, many operating manuals are used to store technical information such as P IDs (Piping and Instrument Diagrams) and MSDS. The mixing of instructions and information in this manner generally reduces the effectiveness of the procedures. Technical information should be available in its own, separate, and stand-alone manual. 

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act, the employer is responsible for ensuring that adequate instruction and information is given to employees to make them safety conscious. Part 1, Section 3 of the Act instructs all employers to prepare a written health and safety policy statement and to bring this to the notice of all employees. Figure 1.2 shows a typical Health and Safety Policy Statement of the type which will be available within your company. Your employer must let you know who your safety representatives are, and the new Health and Safety poster shown In Fig. 1.3 has a blank section into which the names and contact information of your specific representatives can be added. This is a large laminated poster, 595 x 415mm, suitable for wall or notice-board display.

REVISE PRACTICES FOR ISSUANCE OF INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION TO LICENSEES... 

When the tank is placed into service, specific instructions should be given as to what the tank is to be used for, temperature limitations, cleaning instructions, and information on the lining material. 

Instruct and inform the employees as to the dangers associated with their work and as to the measures for the prevention thereof. This should be done before they start the job and afterwards at appropriate intervals, but at least once a year. 

Some of the information belongs in an SOW and need not be repeated in the case of an established partnership. Included may be marking instructions, packaging instructions, and information needed to ensure conformance to standards. 

Engineering controls should be used to isolate or insulate heat sources from any combustible material or flammable atmospheres >- Hot work should be reduced to a minimum >- Maintain good levels of housekeeping >- Provide safe systems of work that minimise fire risk >- Provide adequate training, instruction and information relating to fire safety... 

Safety training is not just a matter of handing out booklets - it is unwise to assume anything about people s previous experiences in construction work, or even their ability to read and understand instructions and information. Safety awareness is not inherited, and induction training on sites is required to make sure that everyone knows what the hazards and the control measures are. 

Drivers must hold a current licence for the type of vehicle they will drive, and must be instructed in the features, controls and operation of any vehicle with which they are not familiar, before driving. They must also be instructed and informed about any hazardous material they may be required to carry in an employer s vehicle, the dangers that can arise, and the action to take in an emergency. 

Before the morning and afternoon sessions, proctors will distribute exam books containing an answer sheet. You should not open the exam book until instructed to do so by the proctor. Read the instructions and information given on the front and back covers and enter your name on the front cover. Listen carefully to all the instructions the proctor reads. The proctor has final authority on the administration of the examination.
