At the same time, a decrease in orientation- and stress-birefringence for the modified BPA-PC could be achieved by optimizing the processing conditions (184,187,189,190,193) this lowers birefringence below 20 nm/mm (single path) for injection-printed injection molded CDs and substrate disks (Fig. 24) (191). Orientation. Most articles made of HDPE, including film, fiber, pipes, and injection-molded articles, exhibit some degree of molecular and crystal orientation (21). In some cases, orientation develops spontaneously for example, during melt flow into a mold and its subsequent crystallisation. Composites. The history of phenoHc resin composites goes back to the early development of phenoHc materials, when wood flour, minerals, and colorants were combined with phenoHc resins to produce mol ding compounds. In later appHcations, resin varnishes were developed for kraft paper and textile fabrics to make decorative and industrial laminates. Although phenoHcs have been well characterized in glass-reinforced composites, new developments continue in this area, such as new systems for Hquid-injection molding (LIM) and sheet-molding compounds (SMC). Liquid-Injection Molding. In Hquid-injection mol ding (LIM), monomers and oligomers are injected into a mold cavity where a rapid polymerization takes place to produce a thermoset article. Advantages of these processes are low cost, low pressure requirement, and flexibiHty in mold configuration. Conventional systems, such as isocyanate with polyol, release Htfle or no volatiles. The generation of substantial volatiles in the mold is obviously undesirable and has represented a significant obstacle to the development of a phenoHc-based LIM system. The poly(vinyl acetal) prepared from acetaldehyde was developed in the early 1940s by Shawinigan Chemicals, Ltd., of Canada and sold under the trade name Alvar. Early uses included injection-molded articles, coatings for paper and textiles, and replacement for shellac. Production peaked in the early 1950s and then decreased as a result of competition from less expensive resins such as poly(vinyl chloride) (see Vinyl polymers, poly(vinyl chloride)). [Pg.449]

These take advantage of PVC s outstanding UL flammabiUty ratings and easy mol ding into thin-waHed parts. Poly(dicyclopentadiene). The development of polydicyclopentadiene [25038-78-2] for reaction injection molding is an area which has generated much interest. The polyDCPD is obtained via metathesis polymerization of high purity (usually greater than 98%) DCPD. Excellent reviews (61—62) of the chemistry and properties of polyDCPD have been pubHshed. The patent Hterature of polyDCPD synthesis, catalysts, modifiers, and appHcations is dominated by Hercules (44 patents) and B. F. According to the composite theory, tensile modulus of fiber reinforced composites can be calculated by knowing the mechanical constants of the components, their volume fraction, the fiber aspect ratio, and orientation. But in the case of in situ composites injection molded, the TLCP fibrils are developed during the processing and are still embedded in the matrix. Their modulus cannot be directly measured. Anisotropic material In an anisotropic material the properties vary, depending on the direction in which they are measured. There are various degrees of anisotropy, using different terms such as orthotropic or unidirectional, bidirectional, heterogeneous, and so on (Fig. 3-19). For example, cast plastics or metals tend to be reasonably isotropic. However, plastics that are extruded, injection molded, and rolled plastics and metals tend to develop an orientation in the processing flow direction (machined direction). Thus, they have different properties in the machine and transverse directions, particularly in the case of extruded or rolled materials (plastics, steels, etc.). [Pg.153]
