Industry standards and guidelines

Designers of emergency pressure relief systems should be familiar with the following list of regulations, codes of practice, and industry standards and guidelines in the United States. 

Section 9.1 covers basic principles of optical fiber operation, fiber manufacturing, and optical fiber design for the major different types of telecommunications-grade optical fibers currently used. Section 9.2 includes information on fiber optic cable designs and applications, basic optical connectivity products, and relevant industry standards and guidelines for fiber optic cable. 

Introduction Review and audit processes are used in the chemical process industry to evaluate, examine, and verify the design of process equipment, operating procedures, and management systems. These processes assure compliance with company standards and guidelines as well as government regulations. Reviews and audits can encompass the areas of process and personnel safety, environmental and industrial hygiene protection, quality assurance, maintenance procedures, and so on. 

The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommend that the highest average amount of heptachlor in workplace air over an 8-hour workday for a 40-hour workweek not be more than 0.5 mg/m. Basic information on the toxicity of many of the most commonly encountered and tox-icologically significant industrial chemicals is provided in Table IV-4. The table Is Intended to expedite the recognition of potentially hazardous exposure situations and therefore provides infomiation such as vapor pressures, warning properties, physical appearance, occupational exposure standards and guidelines, and hazard classification codes, which may also be useful in the assessment of an exposure situation. Table IV-4 is divided into 3 sections health hazards, exposure guidelines, and comments. To use the table correctly, it is important to understand the scope and limitations of the information it provides.

This section introduces important elements that are included in published SMS standards and in other reports. The committee believes that these documents can provide guidance for the SMS requirements described in 585.810 and for additional elements that the committee believes are optimal for any SMS. In assessing the adequacy of BOEM s current SMS requirements, the committee reviewed relevant reports and published SMS standards and guidelines. The review was not exhaustive but included documents often cited by various industries for developing management systems.
