Industry Canada

In Canada, the federal mandate for food control rests with four departments Health Canada, Agriculture and Agri-Eood Canada, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and Industry Canada. A cooperative relationship exists among departments with the ultimate goal of creating a harmonized and streamlined national food control system. All four departments ensure the application of food safety standards in their areas of responsibility to prevent or eliminate human health and safety threats created through chemical, biological, physical, or other hazards.

Cyanex 301 One of the solvent extraction processes, used together with UREX, for separating the components of used nuclear fuel. This process uses a complex phosphinic acid, [bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)dithiophosphinic acid], made by Cytec Industries, Canada. Although not exactly a hearty endorsement of the oil this did open the door to expanded edible use, and the next 5 years saw rapid development of the rapeseed industry. Canada Packers led the way in the use of rapeseed oil in liquid oils, shortenings, and margarines, and various other food processors followed. Introduction and expanded use of the oil was gradual as all of these companies had to do a great deal of testing to develop suitable formulations, and to maintain the required quality in their products. Utilization was assisted by a marked improvement in the quality of rapeseed oil as plant breeders developed improved varieties of rape.
