Graft copolymers combine the properties of their polymeric constituents and as such are polymer alloys, which open a vast field of new polymeric species. This is why active research along these lines is performed in many academic and industrial research laboratories all over the world. However, only few applications have reached a commercial level today. They involve the production of specific polymeric adhesives, perm-selective membranes, bio-medical devices and the surface modification of certain products. [Pg.34]

Joining of an ion-selective electrode and a field-effect transistor (FET) in a single device has made it possible to create a new type of ion concentration detector called the ion-selective field-effect transistor (ISFET.) High sensitivity and selectivity, as well as the very small size of this device, have resulted in its constantly growing applications in recent years in industry, medicine, biology, scientific research, etc. [Pg.243]

The existence of isotope shifts and of tunable lasers with narrow Hnewidth leads to the possibHity of separating isotopes with laser radiation (113,114). This can be of importance, because isotopicaHy selected materials are used for many purposes in research, medicine, and industry. In order to separate isotopes, one needs a molecule that contains the desired element and has an isotope shift in its absorption spectmm, plus a laser that can be tuned to the absorption of one of the isotopic constituents. Several means for separating isotopes are avaHable. The selected species may be ionized by absorption of several photons and removed by appHcation of an electric field, or photodissociated and removed by chemical means. [Pg.19]

The field of modified electrodes spans a wide area of novel and promising research. The work dted in this article covers fundamental experimental aspects of electrochemistry such as the rate of electron transfer reactions and charge propagation within threedimensional arrays of redox centers and the distances over which electrons can be transferred in outer sphere redox reactions. Questions of polymer chemistry such as the study of permeability of membranes and the diffusion of ions and neutrals in solvent swollen polymers are accessible by new experimental techniques. There is hope of new solutions of macroscopic as well as microscopic electrochemical phenomena the selective and kinetically facile production of substances at square meters of modified electrodes and the detection of trace levels of substances in wastes or in biological material. Technical applications of electronic devices based on molecular chemistry, even those that mimic biological systems of impulse transmission appear feasible and the construction of organic polymer batteries and color displays is close to industrial use. [Pg.81]

All of the selected contributions that are present in these special volumes are good representatives for manifesting the importance of the concepts based on conformation-dependent sequence design. It has been our intention to provide the scientific and industrial polymer community with a comprehensive view of the current state of knowledge on designed polymers. Both volumes attempt to review what is currently known about these polymers in terms of their synthesis, chemical and physical properties, and applications. We will feel the volumes have been successful if some of the chapters presented here stimulate readers to become interested in and solve specific problems in this rapidly developing field of research. [Pg.12]
