Industrial designers

Although side-stripper arrangements are common in the petroleum industry, designers have been reluctant to use the fully thermally coupled arrangements in practical applications until recently. 

This particular technique is suitable only for laboratoiy investigation using tanks that are transparent and well illuminated. It does not lend itself to evaluation of the opaque tanks, nor is it used in any study of large-scale tanks in the field. It is a very minimal requirement for uniformity, and definitions suggested earlier are recommended for use in industrial design.

The history of these three lamp types offers as good an example as I know of the mechanism of challenge and response in industrial design. Several more major electric lamp types have been introduced during the past century - one of them will be outlined in the next section - but competition did not eliminate any of them. 

Industrial design problems often oeeur in tubular reaetors that involve the simultaneous solution of AP, energy, and mass balanees. 

In an industrial-design FTIR spectrometer, a modified form of the G enzel interferometer is utilized.A geometric displacement of the moving mirrors by one unit produces four units of optical path difference (compared with two units of optical difference for a Michelson type interferometer). The modified Genzel design reduces the time required to scan a spectrum and further reduces the noise effects asstxiated with the longer mirror translation of most interferometers. 

The correlation of Akers, et. al., has given good results in some industrial designs. The authors report that some vertical and inclined tube data is also correlated on the same basis. The sharp break in the data occurs around a Reynolds number of 5 X lO as shown in Figure 10-75. The mass flow rate used to correlate is the arithmetic average of inlet and oudet liquid condensate and vapor flows ... 

Although there is no substitute for individual action based on a firm philosophical and ethical foundation, designers have developed guidelines for professional conduct based on the experience of many of them who have had to wrestle with troublesome ethical questions and situations previously. These guidelines can be found in the published codes of ethics for designers and engineers of a number of industry and technical societies such as the Industrial Designer societies.
