Applying Catalysis

The costs of these latter development activities and the possible failure of processes, formulations or APIs at these stages have serious financial implications for any organization. Whilst the expenditure on developing new catalysts and new polymers can cost many hundreds of millions of dollars, in pharmaceuticals the total R D cost for a single drug is now approaching US 1 billion. 

The complexity of many heterogeneous systems used in multi-phase reactions, the use of a solid support, the difficulty in analyzing highly dispersed active sites and the bifunctional nature of many solid supported metal catalysts, make a detailed and complete study challenging. The simpler homogeneous systems teach many of the principles of catalysis active sites, reaction mechanisms, reaction kinetics and catalytic cycles, which can often be applied elsewhere.

The mesoscopic domain of real catalysts is mostly covered by the typical catalysis periodicals, such as Applied Catalysis, the Journal of Catalysis, Catalysis Letters, Topics in Catalysis, Catalysis Today, Microporous Materials and Zeolites, although occasionally articles also appear in Journal of Physical Chemistry and Physical Chemistry-Chemical Physics, and many others. 

In addition, there are the highly appreciated review journals, which publish overviews of the status of certain topics of interest in the field. Advances in Catalysis, Catalysis Reviews Science Engineering and Catalysis, Specialist Periodical Reports publish the most exhaustive reviews. CaTTech is a colorful magazine that publishes shorter reviews along with news from the catalysis community. Also the News Brief section of Applied Catalysis fulfills this important role. 

Expressing the activity of a catalyst as the temperature at which a certain conversion level is reached (not uncommon in applied catalysis ) is not recommended, as the overall rate of a catalytic reaction depends in a complicated way on the temperature.
