Tantalum pentoxide is used in making high refractive index optical glass as a dielectric film on tantalum for its use as a capacitor component and rectifier and for preparing tantalum metal, its carbide, and many other tantalum compounds. 

High refractive index optical lenses were prepared by Your et al. (1) consisting of trifluoroethyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, phenyl ethyl acrylate, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate.

Characterization of essential oils must include three kinds of analysis sensory analysis determination of physicochemical properties such as specific gravity (20°C), refractive index, optical rotation, aldehyde and carotenoid contents and solubility spectroscopic properties (UV and IR) and chromatographic analysis. In Table 5.10, the main analytical determinations that can be carried out in the quality control of essential oils are summarized. The ranges of values for each analytical parameter of essential oils from oranges are also shown. 

The essential oils were extracted by hydrodistillation and the organoleptic and physicochemical (density, refractive index, optical rotation and flash point) properties were assessed for each essential oil, according to the Food Chemical Codex protocols 11) (Table 11).

The CPAC group at the University of Washington has developed a refractive index optical detection method that is very sensitive and tailor-made for microchip applications. The advantage of such a technique is that it is a universal detection method, and does not depend on analyte molecules containing chromophores. 

Essential oils obtained by SFME or HD have been evaluated olfactorily by Jean Claude Ellena (Perfurmer from Symrise, France) and Daniel Maurel (Robertet, France). Better reproduction of the natural aroma was more likely for essential oils extracted by SFME than for those extracted by hydrodistillation. Essential oils extracted by SFME and HD have also been analyzed by the AFNOR standard method to determine the usual physical properties characterizing the oils - specific gravity, refractive index, optical rotation, and solubility in 95% ethanol at 20 °C [20, 21]. There was no significant difference between the physical constants of essential oils obtained by SFME and HD. 

Metals are characterized by ultrahigh/low refractive indices and therefore can be used to modily the refractive index of optical plastics. Ultrahigh/low refractive index optical nanocomposites can be used in the waveguide technology (e.g., planar waveguides and optical fibers).
