Bradbury et al. (2004), however, recently reanalyzed the relation between tamoxifen and cataracts and described it as a null association, They used a nested, matched, case-control study design and data collected in the General Practice Research Database. They identified all women 30-79 years old who were diagnosed with breast cancer and treated with tamoxifen within 6 months, or with bladder cancer, colorectal cancer, or nonmelanoma skin cancer between January 1991 and December i999. From this population they identified all newly diagnosed cases of cataract and matched four female controls to each case on age, index date, and study entry data. They assessed the risk of cataracts for current, past, and sometime users of tamoxifen... [Pg.335]

The IbaU index is defined as the percentage of skin cancer or papilloma-developing mice (skin painting experiments) divided by the average latent period in days for the affected animals multiplied by 100 [Daudeland Daudel, 1966 Herndon and Szentpaly, 1986 Barone, Camilo Jr. et al., 1996 Braga, Barone et al., 1999 Barone, Braga et al., 2000]. [Pg.67]

LaHann concluded that capsaicin appeared to facilitate the onset of TPA-induced tumorigenesis and that capsaicin might increase the risk of skin cancer. In the studies of Sasajima et al., capsaicin induced ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity, an enzyme used as an index of tumor promoting capability. There appears to be sufficient evidence that capsaicin may pose a tumorigenic threat. [Pg.365]

Even people living in regions of the world not affected by the ozone hole are increasingly warned about the dangers of UV radiation exposure. Most daily newspapers and TV weather reports routinely report a UV index indicating the expected danger associated with outdoor activities. Skin cancer (melanoma) rates are on the rise. A 1 % decrease in ozone concentration has been predicted to cause a 2% increase in skin cancers. As early as 1999, the amount of UV radiation reaching New Zealand had increased by over 12% compared to the previous decade. [Pg.154]
