INDEX situation

Clearly, Greek or Latin numeral roots in conjunction with numerical locants can be used to indicate the number and positions of fluorine substituents in any type of organo-fluorine compound or group, ranging from monofluorinated systems, e.g. 2-fluorobutane (1), to perfluorinated entities, e.g. l,l,l,2.2,3,4,4,4-nonafluoro-3-iodobutane(2). Fluorine locants may be omitted, and often are in non-indexing situations when naming simple and therefore easily visualized fully fluorinated aliphatic/cycloaliphatic or monocyclic aromatic compounds or groups, e.g. octafluoropropane (3), hexafluorocyclopropane (4), pentafluoropropanoic acid, (5). pentafluorophenyl (6). 

One way to describe this situation is to say that the colligative properties provide a method for counting the number of solute molecules in a solution. In these ideal solutions this is done without regard to the chemical identity of the species. Therefore if the solute consists of several different components which we index i, then nj = S nj j is the number of moles counted. Of course, the total mass of solute in this case is given by mj = Sjnj jMj j, so the molecular weight obtained for such a mixture is given by... 

Taking n = 1.446 as the refractive index in both media, estimate the length of the helix in these two situations. Propose a possible interpretation of the results. 

Selection of a name for a specific compound is heavily influenced by the purpose at hand communication to a general audience, communication with specialists, or storage/retrieval through archival indexes. The first requires the simplest rules possible the second requires the shortest names possible and the third requires rigid adherence to a set of rules that will reliably generate a unique name. The name chosen may be different for each situation, although that is not necessarily so. 

Once the cost of each piece of major equipment is known, it must be adjusted by construction cost indexes. The flow process in an injection mould is complicated by the fact that the mould cavity walls are below the freezing point of the polymer melt. In these circumstances the technologist is generally more concerned with the ability to fill the cavity rather than with the magnitude of the melt viscosity. In one analysis made of the injection moulding situation, Barrie showed that it was possible to calculate a mouldability index (p.) for a melt which was a function of the flow parameters K and the thermal diffusivity and the relevant processing temperatures (melt temperature and mould temperature) but which was independent of the geometry of the cavity and the flow pattern within the cavity. 

These combined HDF and GPC separations require the use of detectors such as static light scattering or viscometers to help sort out the convoluted elution profiles seen in those type of experiments. It should also be remembered in these situations that the typical refractive index or ultraviolet detector responses may not be representative of the actual mass fraction of insolubles eluting from the column because of the significant light scattering that can occur with those large particles in the detector cell. 

While such a number is very useful as an index of performance, it gives no indication of what needs to be done to correct the situation if the index is low.

The use of Polya s Theorem in a specialized context such as the above, has led to the extension of the theorem along certain useful lines. One such derivation pertains to the situation where the boxes are not all filled from the same store of figures. More specifically, the boxes are partitioned into a number of subsets, and there is a store of figures peculiar to each subset. To make sense of this we must assume that no two boxes in different subsets are in the same orbit of the group in question. A simple extension of Polya s Theorem enables us to tackle problems of this type. Instead of the cycle index being a function of a single family of variables, the 5j, we have other families of variables, one for each subset. An example from chemical enumeration will make this clear. 

Such simple considerations led Scholten and Konvalinka to confirm the form of the dependence of the reaction velocity on the pressure, as had been observed in their experiments. In certain cases, such as the treatment of zoo animals or endangered species, it may be impossible to recover the cost of approval of a drug for that species. In such circumstances, the FDA can add the drug to an index oflegally marketed non-approved drugs. A drug can only be indexed for use in situations vhere there is no risk of it entering the human food chain. 

Qualitative (identification) applications depend upon the comparison of the retention characteristics of the unknown with those of reference materials. In the case of gas chromatography, this characteristic is known as the retention index and, although collections of data on popular stationary phases exist, it is unlikely that any compound has a unique retention index and unequivocal identification can be effected. In liquid chromatography, the situation is more complex because there is a much larger number of combinations of stationary and mobile phases in use, and large collections of retention characteristics on any single system do not exist. In addition, HPLC is a less efficient separation... 

An effective HE or cost-effectiveness analysis is designed to answer certain questions, such as Is the treatment effective What will it cost and How do the gains compare with the costs By combining answers to all of these questions, the technique helps decision makers weigh the factors, compare alternative treatments, and decide which treatments are most appropriate for specific situations. Typically, one chooses the option with the least cost per unit of measure gained the results are represented by the ratio of cost to effectiveness (C E). With this type of analysis, called a cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA), various disease end points that are affected by therapy (risk markers, disease severity, death) can be assessed by corresponding indexes of therapeutic outcome (mmHg blood pressure reduction, hospitalizations averted, life years saved, respectively). It is beyond the scope of this chapter to elaborate further on principles of cost-effectiveness analyses. A number of references are available for this purpose [11-13].
