Mice are utilized for testing antiseptics for appHcation to cuts, wounds, and incisions (339). One other unique use of MTBE is a medical procedure for the removal of gallstones. This alternative to gallbladder surgery was developed at the Mayo Clinic, and takes advantage of MTBE s capabiUty to quickly dissolve cholesterol. A small incision is used to inject a small amount of MTBE direedy into the gallbladder, and the gallstone can then be removed in solution form (28). [Pg.429]

Despite the universal use of sutures for wound closure, there is a need to utilize adhesives instead, because of their ease of use and the reduced risk of infection. They have been approved for external use only, because of concerns with the fact that the polymers do not readily biodegrade and can cause inflammation around the area to which it was applied. However, these concerns are reduced for -butyl cyanoacrylate, as compared to the ethyl cyanoacrylate. There is even some evidence that their use as liquid sutures actually reduces the rate of infection around the healing wound or surgical incision [42J. [Pg.865]

A crude process of extraction of urushiol from the tree Rhus vernicifera was used by the Chinese during the Chou dynasty of 1122-249 BC, and the process was systematised by the Japanese.
