Octyl-2-cyanoacrylate

Components/ mechanism of action Light-activated polyethylene-glycol (PEG) polymer sealant for lung tissue. Monomeric (2-octyl cyanoacrylate) formulation tissue adhesive for skin closure. Bovine albumin cross-linked with gluteraldehyde tissue adhesive/sealant. 

At present there is only one commercially available tissue adhesive with approved on-label indications for skin closure. 2-Octyl-cyanoacrylate (Dermabond, Ethicon, Inc., Somerville, NJ) is presently indicated for skin closure in wounds which are not under extreme tension. This tissue adhesive is approved for topical skin application only. It is not indicated for internal use. The material is useful in closing traumatic skin lacerations [4,5] after wounds have been thoroughly cleaned as well as for minimally invasive surgical incisions and even larger surgical incisions in elective cases. Polycyanocrylate - 2-Octyl-cyanoacrylate plasticized and self-stabilized is the slower, but slightly more flexible (octyl- vs. ethyl-substituent group) ionically curing adhesive that is catalyzed by weak bases including water. The liquid and nonsolvated DermabondR product forms a continuous film in -3-5 min that is continuous and very adherent to tissue. 

Formulations of 2-octyl cyanoacrylate (Liquid Bandage12), polyvinyl acetate, poly-butryal were successful in rat studies, however, a spray-on bandage is recommended for ease-of-use and, especially for one-hand application such as with a pump-type spray bottle. Aerosol cans are under pressure and may not be allowed to be carried on aircraft.

In recent years, the higjr adhesive strength of superglues has captured attention in new fields. Medical-grade superglues such as 2-octyl cyanoacrylate are now commonly used as sutures in laceration repair. They have also proven effective in skin, bone, and cartilage grafts.
