Administration of 5 ppm barium, the acetate, to mice in the drinking water in a life-time study had no observable effects on longevity, mortality, and body weights, or on the incidence of tumors (53). Long-term studies in rats exposed to Ba " in drinking water containing 5 mg/L, as acetate, or 10—250 mg/L, as chloride, resulted in no measurable toxic effects (47). 

Eluoride added to a compatible dentifrice base at a level of 1000 ppm has been clinically proven to reduce the incidence of dental caries by about 25% on average, even in areas where the water supply is fluoridated (4). Elevation to 1500 ppm increases the protection. Sources of fluoride approved for use in dentifrices are sodium fluoride [7681-49-4] (0.22%), sodium monofluorophosphate (0.76%), and stannous fluoride [7783-47-3] (0.41%). The Eood and Dmg Administration regulates fluoridated dentifrices as dmgs and has estabUshed parameters for safe and effective products. CompatibiUty of the fluoride with the abrasive is an important requirement.

Indomethacin treatment is associated with a high incidence (30%) of side effects typical for those seen with other NSAIDs (see above). Gastrointestinal side effects, in particular, are more frequently observed after indomethacin than after administration of other NSAIDs. The market share of indomethacin ( 5%) is therefore low compared to that for other non-steroidal anti-rheumatic agents. 

The initial phase must contain three or more of the following drugp isoniazid, rifampin, and pyrazin-amide, along with either ethambutol or streptomycin. The CDC recommends treatment to begin as soon as possible after the diagnosis of tuberculosis. The treatment recommendation regimen is for the administration of rifampin, isoniazid, and pyrazinamide for a minimum of 2 months (8 weeks), followed by rifampin and isoniazid for 4 months (16 weeks) in areas with a low incidence of tuberculosis. In areas of high incidence of tuberculosis, the CDC recommends the addition of streptomycin or ethambutol for the first 2 months.

Because some patients are more sensitive to side effects with digoxin, the dosage is selected carefully and adjusted as the clinical condition indicates. Adverse reactions were more common and severe in past years before careful attention to weight, renal function, and the concurrent administration of certain medications was given. The incidence and severity of digoxin toxicity has decreased significantly in recent years.

The incidence of adverse reactions associated with the ophthalmic drags is usually small. Because small amounts of the ophthalmic preparation may be absorbed systemically, some of the adverse effects associated with systemic administration of the particular drug may be observed. Some ophthalmic preparations produce momentary stinging or burning on instillation.
