Interest in naphtha (nafta) began with the discovery that petroleum could be used as an illuminant and as a supplement to bituminous incendiaries, which were becoming increasingly common in warfare. Greek fire was a naphtha—bitumen (or naphtha—asphalt) mix the naphtha provided the flame and the bitumen (or asphalt) provided the adhesive properties that prolonged the incendiary effect. [Pg.200]

Metal Incendiaries. Metal incendiaries include those of magnesium in various forms, and powdered or granular aluminum mixed with powdered iron(III) oxide. Magnesium is a soft metal which, when raised to its ignition temperature, bums vigorously in air. It is used in either soHd or powdered form as an incendiary filling, and in alloyed form as the casing for small incendiary bombs. [Pg.400]

The thermate mixture, composed of thermite and various additives, is used in igniter compositions for magnesium bombs. A number of such compositions have been developed. Three of these were Therm-8, Thermate-TH2 (formerly Therm-8-2), and Thermate-TH3 (formerly Therm-64-C). Therm-8 was the precursor of later, improved igniting formulations TH2 differs from Therm-8 in that TH2 contains no sulfur and slightly less thermite. TH3 was found to be superior to the others and thus adopted for use in the incendiary magnesium bomb. The wt % composition of TH3 is thermite, 68.7 barium nitrate, 29.0 sulfur, 2.0 and as a binder, oil, 0.3. [Pg.401]

The TH3 core is ignited by the primer, and the burning core then melts and ignites the magnesium alloy body of the bomb. The incendiary action on the target is localized. There is Utde scattering of the incendiary material. [Pg.401]
