In-line cleaning

An automated supercritical fluid extraction and in-line clean-up system has been developed for organochlorine and organophosphate pesticide residues contained in fats (Hopper, 1999).

The oligonucleotides are then introduced into the ESI-MS using an HPLC, which allows further in-line clean up of the sample, for analysis. Ion masses representing both the sense and antisense strands for each variant are monitored independently by ESI-MS, providing a near-perfect internal control. 

High-pressure spray in air in-line cleaning processes that remove flux residues from PCBs, are often employed by manufactures to clean large quantities of boards. This still represents the most economical way to clean large quantities of PCBs. Especially for contract manufactures that are required to clean different types of PCBs, often with several different flux residues.

Innovation in line-cleaning solutions is a fertile area in which, on a regular basis, another formulation comes along which is claimed to deliver better cleaning capability. However any independent evidence to support such claims is typically non-existent. Furthermore it is surprising how tunes are played with the composition of line-cleaning solutions, especially with regard to claims for the concentration of components. Bizarre... 

More innovative but less successful innovations in line cleaning include novel approaches such as the use of ozone, chlorine dioxide and peracetic acid. Although these are well-accepted approaches in (brewery) CiP disinfection, none have made an impact on dispense line cleaning, although, pleasingly, ozone has at least been evaluated under controlled conditions (Fielding et al., 2007). 

The MSRE secondary coolant was kept extremely clean during the 4-year operation of the reactor, and no in-line cleaning was required. It is likely that the AHTR will not require a complex clean-up system for the coolant, but that more extensive cleanup may be needed on a period determined by the release of fission products from the fuel. 

GILSP plants, IDF (International Dairy Federation), ILC (In-Line Cleaning) and Triclover fitting are satisfactorily usedJ All these designs provide a seal ring which butts up flush to the internal bores of the connecting pipework. 

Once the number of tubes is known, pitch (square or triangle) and number of tube passes is known, the shell size can be defined. A square pitch is chosen for reasons of convenience in cleaning the outside of the tubes because when the tubes are in-line, cleaning is relatively easy. Tubes on a triangular pitch cannot be cleaned by tools, but rather by passing a chemical solution through on the shell side. The standard choice is square pitch 1.25 in. for 1-in. OD tubes, and 1 in. square pitch for in. OD tubes. Knowing the number of tubes and number of passes the required inside diameter (ID) of the shell can... 

Typical exposure times for UV/O3 cleaning are from a few minutes to remove a few MLs of hydrocarbon contamination to hours, days, or weeks for storage of cleaned surfaces. The UV/O3 cleaning technique has the advantage that it can be used as a dry, in-line cleaning technique at atmospheric pressure. It is also useful for cleaning holes (vias) in surfaces.
