The research work described here was carried out by an able group of students of Yamaguchi University and Ube Techinical College, and in collaboration with our laboratory staffs and industrial colleagues. In particular, Dr. S. Fujisaki and Dr. T. Okamoto made significant contributions. We thank them all, and also Dr. H. Tsuzuki of Central Analytical Center of Kyushu University undertook X-ray crystal structure analysis of BTMA Br3. Furthermore, we wish to thank Professor M. Tashiro of Kyushu University for useful discussions. Finally, we are grateful to Professor Y. Sasson of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Chairman of the Scientific Committee of Orgabrom 93, for the invitation to present this work in Jerusalem. [Pg.47]

Starting in late 1996, the University of Jerusalem s Professor David Avnir, the pioneer of sol gel doped materials, has been much more than a mentor. I thank him also for all he has done for me in all these years. The wonderful work of Sharon Marx with chiral sol-gels is impressive, and also, Sharon, the celebration of Hanukkah at your parents home in Jerusalem in late 2001 will not be forgotten. [Pg.7]

Mario holds a PhD in chemistry from Palermo University (1998), the topic of his thesis being the selective oxidation of carbohydrates mentors were David Avnir in Jerusalem and Arjan de Nooy in the Netherlands. He has also studied and worked in France and Germany. In 2005 he was appointed Maitre de conferences associe at the Montpellier Ecole Nationale Superieure de Chimie. Between 1993 and 1994 he worked in the Netherlands, initially at the Rijks Universiteit, Leiden, and then at the TNO Food Research Institute in Zeist. In 1998 he was with Michel Vignon at the Grenoble CNRS, and in 2001 he joined Carsten Bolm s research group at Aachen Polytechnic. [Pg.9]

In other words, mining did not necessarily in itself yield a great profit, but employment increased the wealth of nations. We see a similar idea in J. J. Becher s justification of alchemy in the Physica subterranea. In the hands of an honest prince, alchemy (like mining) is virtuous exploitation of one s own national natural resources. Becher asks Why go abroad when you have what you need at home If Solomon could have made gold at home in Jerusalem he would not have had to cross the sea (Becher 697). [Pg.28]

I believe that since then Stein s group in Jerusalem has accumulated evidence which suggests that at least under some conditions this is the main reaction path of ferrous ions with hydrogen atoms. In view of this, I wonder specifically what evidence you had bearing on this point. This is important, not only in relation to this class of mechanisms, but also to the more general problem of how the interaction involved in the relatively ionic coordination of a ligand such as water to a metal ion would reflect in weakening a covalent P—H bond. [Pg.145]

Editing of the book started in Jerusalem and continued in a large part in Fukuoka, Japan, where I spent the last year as a visitor in the Institute for Fundamental Research of Organic Chemistry, Kyushu University. Thanks are due to members of the Institute for showing me the well-known Japanese hospitality during the period. It is also a pleasure to congratulate one of the authors, Prof. G. A. Based on the results of analysis in this present study, it was found that while the Tyrian coins all show relatively constant high silver levels during the years before and after the period 44-13 B.C.E., during this period the silver content is erratic and drops significantly. The end of this period corresponds closely with the appearance of the KP (or KAP) control mark on Tyrian silver coins, and which lasted until the end of this coinage. The results have been interpreted in the context of social and economic conditions in Tyre and surrounding Judea and Syria at that time period. In particular, it appears that interactions between Herod and Augustus, and between Herod and the Temple in Jerusalem are reflected in the variation of the silver content of the coins. [Pg.273]

Based on analysis of over 800 coins, there appears to have been a destabilization of the Tyrian shekel in about 44 B.C.E. and a re-stabilization in about 13 B.C.E. The re-stabilization coincides with the appearance of the control mark KP (or KAP) and which continues throughout the remaining duration of these coins. The destabilization correlates closely with the instability of the Roman Empire prior to the rise of Augustus Caesar, and the re-stabilization correlates to the re-stabilization of Roman mints and with interactions between Augustus, Herod, and the Temple authorities in Jerusalem. [Pg.273]

P° = 101.325 kPa (= 1 atm). At reduced pressures the solvent boils at Twater boils at 97°C), by certain weather conditions, or on the application of a partial vacuum. Since the boiling point is strongly pressure dependent, and since the usual determination with a mercury-inglass thermometer suspended in the vapour depends on the position of the thermometer, corrections to P° and for the thermometer stem-length have... [Pg.120]

The venues of the symposia have provided unique opportunities to visit scenic and cultural sites throughout the world. These sites have included the national parks in Utah cathedrals and palaces in Europe, Korea, and Japan dinner cmises on the Inland Sea from Hiroshima to Miyajima and on the canals of the Netherlands the Edinburgh Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle historic sites in Jerusalem beautiful beaches of Hawaii Jean-Marie Lehn presenting an organ recital in the Sheffield cathedral the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and ancient Tuscany villages in Italy. These visits provided opportunity for informal contact and increased the appreciation of the participants for the cultural and scenic values in other locations. [Pg.3]

That even Jews sometimes make false statements about the period between 1945 and 1993 cannot be disputed. This was particularly clear in the criminal trial of John Demjanjuk in Jerusalem. The trial ended with an acquittal for the accused, since even the Israeli court could not shut its eyes to the flood of false documents and false witness testimony.576 Fortunately, in this case also, Jewish personalities turned... [Pg.348]

In verse 27 it states that "the king made silver to be in Jerusalem as stones." That surely is something that never happened before nor since, but by some strange law of occult transmission, the idea of "getting the gold" from the most unlikely places seems to have dominated the Hebraic race, until to-day they are the financial masters of the world. They may be justly proud of their ancestor, Solomon, and be honored in naming their descendants for him. [Pg.48]

One of the practical applications of the optical polarization of molecular angular momenta is the investigation of the stereochemical forces in the process of molecule-atom collisions. The most complete information on the dependence of atom-molecule interaction potential on the orientation of the molecule with respect to the relative collision velocity can be obtained by the method of molecular beams, and often in conjunction with inhomogeneous magnetic and electric fields which orient the molecules. Such investigations are undoubtedly very complex, and their realization rather costly. To convince oneself of it one might just peruse the Proceedings of the First Workshop on Dynamic Stereochemistry in Jerusalem in 1986 [66] see also [67, 341],... [Pg.43]
