Pure selenium deficiency, without concurrent vitamin E deficiency, is not generally seen except in animals on experimental diets (113). In China, selenium deficiency in humans has been associated with Keshan disease, a cardiomyopathy seen in children and in women of child-bearing ages, and Kashin-Beck disease, an endemic osteoarthritis in adolescents (113). 

SWS/SWA, in particular, may play an important role in somatic and cognitive restoration, including the consolidation of certain forms of procedural and declarative memory. A substantial diminution in the amount of SWS/SWA occurs across the human lifespan. This decline is beginning already in adolescence and middle-aged adults have only 25% of the SWS observed in young adults, whereas the elderly have almost none. While the clinical importance of these phenomena is unknown, it is reasonable to speculate that they may be related to the increase of sleep complaints associated with aging.

In the vitamin D deficiency disease rickets, the bones of children are undermineralized as a result of poor absorption of calcium. Similar problems occur in adolescents who are deficient during their growth spurt. Osteomalacia in adults results from demineralization of bone in women who have little exposure to sunlight, often after several pregnancies. Although vitamin D is essential for prevention and treatment of osteomalacia in the elderly, there is little evidence that it is beneficial in treating osteoporosis. 

The prefrontal cortex (PFQ and in particular the dorsal lateral part (DLPFQ appear to be particularly important in schizophrenia (Kerwin 1992). Lesions there are known to produce functional defects in humans reminiscent of many of the negative symptoms of schizophrenia, such as attention and cognitive defects and withdrawal. Despite this, no specific pathology is seen in the DLPFC in schizophrenics although there is some atrophy and neuronal loss which are normally old and could be congenital. That being so, it is necessary to explain why the symptoms become apparent only in adolescence.

Personality disorders are inflexible and maladaptive patterns of behavior that deviate markedly from expectations of society. These patterns are stable over time, pervasive and rigid, and lead to distress or impairment in the individual s life. Growth suppression or delay is a major concern for parents of children taking stimulants. However, the evidence of this side effect is not dear. At present, growth delay appears to be transient and to resolve by midadolescence, but more data are needed to firmly resolve this issue.10 Another concern is the risk of substance abuse with stimulant use. The first pertussis whole cell vaccine was a mixture of killed organisms that was associated with frequent local and systemic reactions. In the late 1980s, an acellular pertussis vaccine was introduced that contains purified pertussis components that are immunogenic but associated with fewer adverse reactions. Acellular pertussis vaccine is available in combination with tetanus and diphtheria toxoids. Pertussis is not available as a separate vaccine component. In the spring of 2005, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid, and acellular pertussis vaccines for use in adolescents and adults. 

The effect of orlistat in adolescent patients has been evaluated recently. In a group of 12- to 16-year-old individuals, orlistat (120 mg three times daily) in combination with diet, exercise, and behavior modification exhibited minimal weight increase after 1 year (0.53 kg) compared with placebo-treated patients (3.14 kg). Common adverse reactions observed were fatty or oily stools, oily spotting, oily evacuation, or abdominal pain and/or flatulence with bowel movements. Soft stools, nausea, increased defecation, and fecal incontinence also were noted. Orlistat may be better suited for prevention of weight gain in tolerant adolescents, but more studies are warranted before providing a solid recommendation.36...
