Figure 18.10 is an illustration of the equipment used in a typical drop-type impact resistance test. Typical impact resistance values (based on the illustrated drop-type equipment u g the screenmg procedure) for some common fertilizers are listed in Table 18.8. 

In many film applications the product is subjected to puncture or impact loads. These types of loads are applied perpendicular to the plane of the film. Therefore, the stresses act biaxially (in both the machine and transverse directions simultaneously) and are not represented well by a uniaxial test. Impact resistance tests are designed to biaxially load the film to measure its energy absorbing capability.

Mechanical properties are critical for many composite applications. The properties of the composites depend on the combination of the properties of the matrix and the reinforcing agent or fiber. The properties of polymer composites reinforced with short fibers depend on such factors as the fiber/ matrix interaction, the orientation and volume fraction of the fiber, the fiber aspect ratio (defined as Lid where L and d correspond to the fiber length and diameter, respectively) (Chawla, 1998) and processing conditions (Thomas and Pothan, 2008). Different tests can be used to evaluate the mechanical properties of the composites, such as tensile, flexural or impact resistance tests (Izod or Charpy tests).

Recycled PVC separation has shown the presence of up to 8% impact modifier. Impact resistance tests, performed with an instnunented falling weight, have shown that this level of impact modifier is more than adequate coextruded pipes perform better rmder impact when the foamed layer is made of recycled PVC compared to a reference formulation based on virgin resin. 

Free falling dart. ATS FAAR supplies the Fall-o-Scope Universal apparatus for impact resistance tests with free or guided fall taps (Table 18 ). The apparatus can be set to obtain the rate of energy absorption dnring the impact. The apparatus is capable of performing tests to different specifications with computerised operation in the temperatnre range 70-200 "C.
