Imiquimod cream

Lichen planus was reported at distant sites from topical imiquimod application in a 44-year-old man treated for actinic cheilitis. Lichen planus lesions developed on the upper and lower limbs shortly after application of imiquimod cream 5% to the lower labixun, which resolved with topical clobetasol cream [355 ]. [Pg.431]

Imiquimod cream is used for the treatment of external anogenital warts, where it may be used for both keratinised and non-keratinised lesions. It is also used in superficial basal cell carcinoma and actinic keratosis. Side-effects include local reactions such as itching, burning sensation, erythema, erosion, oedema, excoriation and stabbing and, less commonly, local ulceration. Patients should be advised to rub it in and to allow it to stay on the treated area for 6-10 hours for warts. The cream should then be washed off with mild soap and water. [Pg.161]

Immunosuppressed patients The safety and efficacy of imiquimod cream in immunosuppressed patients have not been established. [Pg.2066]

Previous drug or surgical treatment Imiquimod cream administration is not recommended until the skin is completely healed from any previous drug or surgical treatment. [Pg.2066]

Actinic keratosis Safety and efficacy have not been established for imiquimod cream in the treatment of actinic keratosis with repeated use (more than 1 treatment course) in the same 25 cm area. [Pg.2066]

Basal cell nevus syndrome or xeroderma pigmentosum The efficacy and safety of imiquimod cream have not been established for patients with basal cell nevus syndrome or xeroderma pigmentosum. [Pg.2066]

Photosensitivity Avoid exposure to sunlight (including sunlamps) or minimize it during use of imiquimod cream because of concern for heightened sunburn susceptibility. [Pg.2066]

Skin A 36-year-old Chinese woman receiving 5% topical imiquimod cream for treatment of genital warts. After six weeks the patient reported localised depigmentation attributed to localised vitiligo. Her husband, a 37-year-old man, received the same treatment for genital warts. After four weeks he complained of a macular rash limit to the areas treated with topical imiquimod. Histopathological features of a punch biopsy sample confirmed lichen planus [353 ]. [Pg.431]

Imiquimod is an immune response modifier shown to be effective in the topical treatment of external genital and perianal warts (ie, condyloma acuminatum see Chapter 61). The 5% cream is applied three times weekly and washed off 6-10 hours after each application. Recurrences appear to be less common than after ablative therapies. Imiquimod is also effective against actinic keratoses, and possibly, molluscum contagiosum. Local skin reactions are the most common side effect these tend to resolve within weeks after therapy. However, pigmentary skin changes may persist. Systemic adverse effects such as fatigue and influenza-like syndrome have occasionally been reported. [Pg.1087]

Imiquimod should be applied to the wart tissue three times per week and left on the skin for 6-10 hours prior to washing off with mild soap and water. Treatment should be continued until eradication of the warts is accomplished, but not for more than a total of 16 weeks. Recommended treatment of actinic keratoses consists of twice-weekly applications on the contiguous area of involvement. The cream is removed after approximately 8 hours with mild soap and water. Treatment of superficial basal cell carcinoma consists of five-times-per-week application to the tumor, including a 1-cm margin of surrounding skin, for a 6-week course of therapy. [Pg.1292]
