Hydroxy cyclohexyl phenyl ketone

The relationship between structure and photoinitiation activity has been examined for polymeric systems bearing side-chain 1-substituted cyclohexyl-phenyl ketone moieties in the UV curing of the HDDA/BA equimolar mixture [19,20]. Indeed, the activity of poly[(l-acryloxycyclohexyl)phenyl ketone] [poly (APK)] and styrene/4-chloromethyl-styrene/l-(4-styrylmethyloxy)cyclohexyl phenyl ketone copolymers (PABOK) has been compared with that of the corresponding low-molecular-weight structural models such as 1-hydroxy-cyclohexyl phenyl ketone (HPK), 1-acetoxy-cyclohexyl phenyl ketone (ACPK) and l-(4-isopropyl-benzyloxy) cyclohexyl phenyl ketone (PIBOK). 

Onium salts are also reduced by photoinitiators such as hydroxy cyclohexyl phenyl ketone (IRGACURE 184), which efficiently form easily oxidizable free radicals as is shown in Figure 9.

Several UV applications require good weatherability, i.e., nonyellowing. Photoinitiators based on alpha-substituted acetophenone show good performance in these applications. Hydroxy cyclohexyl phenyl ketone is a popular commercial product of this type. 

Hydroxy Alkyl Phenyl Ketones The basic structures, 2-hydroxy-2-methyl-l-phenyl-1-propanone HAP and 1-hydroxy-cyclohexyl-1-phenyl ketone HCAP, are also well known [17] and still largely used (10.10) and studied [2i,f,18]. The para substitution of the benzoyl group (with an amino, an ether, or a thioether group) drastically changes the electronic transitions but does not significantly affect the reactivity of the derived benzoyl initiating radical.
