Hydrogen , preparation

The products of this electrolysis have a variety of uses. Chlorine is used to purify drinking water large quantities of it are consumed in making plastics such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Hydrogen, prepared in this and many other industrial processes, is used chiefly in the synthesis of ammonia (Chapter 12). Sodium hydroxide (lye), obtained on evaporation of the electrolyte, is used in processing pulp and paper, in the purification of aluminum ore, in the manufacture of glass and textiles, and for many other purposes. [Pg.499]

Triatomic Hydrogen.—Papers on the reactivity of hydrogen prepared by the electrolysis of dilute sulphuric acid have been published by Osann.5 The special reactivity of the gas was proved by Lowenthal6 to be due to the presence of sulphur dioxide derived from the sulphuric acid. [Pg.29]

Schlesinger and Burg describe many metallo borohydridcs which are metal-boron-hydrogen compounds containing unusually large amounts of hydrogen, prepared by the action of diborane on the metal alltyl compounds. [Pg.405]

Although Shanfield and Smith failed to prove their point, it is likely that cycloolefins are involved in the hydrogenation of aromatics. The reader is therefore referred to the excellent reviews of olefin hydrogenation prepared by Burwell (23), Siegel (24), and Bond and Wells (23) and to the numerous literature references therein. The use of transition metals as hydrogenation catalysts is thoroughly reviewed in Catalysis by Metals by Bond (26) and in many research papers. [Pg.6]

Sodium modification of non-reduced catalysts was carried out with ethanolic-NaOH. Crushed and sieved catalysts were inserted into intensively stirred sodium hydroxide dissolved in ca 50 ml of ethanol. The amount of NaOH was tuned to match the value of UNaOH / (oru + nsn) = 50. The stirring followed for a couple of minutes, until the coagulation of the catalyst powder was observed. Subsequently the catalyst was carefully washed several times with small amounts of ethanol. The obtained catalyst was dried in nitrogen atmosphere for 2 hours at 473 K. Prior to hydrogenation, prepared catalyst were activated in hydrogen flow at the temperature of 473 K for a period of 2 hours. [Pg.759]
