Some graphite-epoxy structures can be tailored to have a zero coefficient of thermal expansion, a big advantage for large antennas that must pass in and out of the sun, yet maintain dimensional stability for accuracy of pointing the signal. For example, a graphite-epoxy truss is used to stabilize and support the Hubble Space Telescope. [Pg.50]

In 1994, a unique incident occurred the impact of the Shoemaker-Levy comet on the Jovian atmosphere. Die strong gravitational field of Jupiter caused the comet to break up before it could enter the atmosphere, and the parts of the comet crashed separately into the atmosphere one after the other. This unique spectacle was observed by many observatories and also by the Galileo spacecraft and the Hubble telescope. It led to the discovery of yet another phenomenon the most intensive aurora effects in the solar system, observed at Jupiter s poles. Astronomers assume that the energy for these comes from the planet s rotation, possibly with a contribution from the solar wind. This process differs from that of the origin of the aurora on Earth, where the phenomenon is caused by interactions between the solar wind and the Earth s magnetic field. [Pg.48]

The SSI (solid-state imaging) camera on board the Galileo spacecraft transmitted impressive high-resolution pictures of Io s volcanic activity. Active lava lakes, lava curtains , calderas, mountains and plateaus can be seen (McEwen et al., 2000). The Hubble telescope detected both S2 gas and SO2 in a SO2 to S2 ratio of 1 4 in the smoke trail of the volcano Pele. This value suggests an equilibrium between silicate magmas in the neighbourhood of the quartz-fayalite-magnetite buffer (see Sect. 7.2.2). [Pg.49]

Using the Hubble telescope, the extrasolar planet HD 209458b (a gas planet with 0.7 times the mass of Jupiter) has been shown to have an extensive external atmosphere consisting of atomic hydrogen it is possible that the hydrogen is escaping from the planet (Vidal-Madjar et al., 2003). [Pg.296]

The Hubble mid-UV echelle spectra extend blueward to 2130 A for hot stars, or to 2380 A or 2885 A for cooler ones. Redward they extend to 3120 A for faint stars, to 2885 A for bright hot stars, and to 3150 A for bright cool stars. These spectra are flux-calibrated, which fixes the mid-UV continuum normalization. [Pg.75]

Recent Hubble observations of boron in a sample of Li-rich K giants (de la Reza, Smith Cunha in preparation) have apparently not detected any signal of a substantial presence of this element. In some cases, the large rotation and the presence of strong UV emission lines at the 2497 A region difficult the measure of the real B abundances. In conclusion, it appears that there is no indication of the presence of other than 7Li light elements in the Li rich K giants. [Pg.198]

Since the expansion rate (the Hubble parameter) depends on the square root of the combination of G (Newton s constant) and the density, the expansion rate factor (S) is related to ZiNj, by,... [Pg.340]

We adopted as the present chemical composition the O/H, C/O, N/O, and Fe/H abundances from the H II region Hubble V (Peimbert et al. 2005) and from A-type supergiants (Venn et al. 2001). With these abundances and assuming the solar abundances by Asplund et al. (2005), we have determined its metallicity (Z = 0.6Zq). Since Venn et al. find no metallicity gradient, we have assumed that at present the ISM is well mixed. We have obtained the amount of gaseous mass, Mgas = 2 x 108Mq, based on the H I measurement inside r < 5 kpc, the present helium abundance, and an estimation of M(H2). [Pg.360]

Quantification of at least one merger and assembly history, for the Milky Way, is required to test the generality of these evolutionary paths. Fig. 1. The age of the Universe is the inverse of the Hubble constant. The system of units must first be rationalised to convert all of the light-years into kilometres and then years, so that ... [Pg.34]
