Housekeeping Considerations

General conditions should be inspected. Electronic/electrical equipment should be clean, enclosed, clearly marked, thoroughly labeled, shielded, grounded, suitable for the environment, corrosion-ffee, accessible, and operating within allowed parameters.

Continued recycling of effluent would soon give an unusable product, and tertiary treatment, although expensive, is essential. In some instances, considerable amounts of water can be saved by careful housekeeping and process change. 

Cleanliness and good housekeeping in machine shops do much to avoid bacterial infection, and their importance cannot be overstressed. Various techniques such as heat treatment, centrifuging and filtration can be used to advantage, although economic considerations may restrict their use to systems containing large volumes of soluble oil. Chemical sterilization with bactericides can be more convenient. 

With regard to operational considerations, the recirculation pump pressure gauges (which measure pressure differentials and consequently indicate possible blockage in the coiled tube) require frequent calibration. Regular cleaning and good housekeeping are also required, especially within the furnace area. 

Q Health Factor. Some communities make it easy for people to grow old in their own home by providing services such as Meals on Wheels, home nursing care, housekeeping assistance, and so on. Retirement centers often go further. It may not be a critical factor during early retirement years, but it can become increasingly important later. In looking over the factors under consideration, does this one merit a priority check ... 

The number of files per disk is given as the number of samples (of 10,000 cells each) whose list mode data (4-parameter/ 1024-channel resolution) after acquisition can be stored to media of the indicated size. The capacity in bytes of the different media is representative but will vary with the formats of different computing systems. Similarly, different acquisition software will require more or less extra storage space for the housekeeping information that is stored with each sample. Prices of media are illustrative, but will vary considerably from place to place and over time. 

Limiting the generation of waste is the first and most important consideration in managing radioactive wastes. Until recent years, it was believed that NDPK was merely a housekeeping enzyme with a role in the maintenance of cellular pools of nucleoside triphosphates other than ATP. However, considerable evidence has now accumulated to implicate NDPKs as being multifunctional, having a role in cell-signalling, development and other cellular processes, some of which is discussed here. 

There is no reason why a solvent recovery operation, whether independent or in-house, should not achieve the same high standard of safety and good housekeeping as any other chemical plant. There are, however, problems and potential hazards that are more commonly found in reprocessing solvents than in the generality of chemical manufacture and they warrant special consideration in the design and management of such facilities.
