If it is decided that an operation does require to be manned, then it may need to be manned on a 24-hour basis, or a 12-hour basis, or only for daily inspection. Accommodation may be provided on a separate living quarters platform or as part of an integrated platform, or on a floating hotel.

Pipes, valves, fittings, and almost all other components of small equipment are now available in plastic or ceramics, which do not corrode in salt water and are less expensive than the metals now used. Synthetic detergents are now available for use with seawater, although a final rinse with freshwater may be desired. Saltwater sewage can be treated successfully. Dual water systems using freshwater and seawater are already in use on ships and in many island resort hotels. Many of these also have seawater systems for fire fighting. This trend will grow. 

Where high wetfastness is needed, for example in hotel lobbies and bars where Hquid spillages are likely, the higher fastness acid dyes (Groups 2 and 3) and even metal complex dyes are used. 

The U-tube exchanger with copper tubes, cast-iron header, and other parts of carbon steel is used for water and steam services in office buildings, schools, hospitals, hotels, etc. Nonferrous tube sheets and admiralty or 90-10 copper-nickel tubes are the most frequently used substitute materials. These standard exchangers are available from a number of manufacturers at costs far below those of custom-built process-industry equipment. 

PAFC systems are commercially available from the ONSI Corporation as 200-kW stationary power sources operating on natural gas. The stack cross sec tion is 1 m- (10.8 ft"). It is about 2.5 m (8.2 ft) tall and rated for a 40,000-h life. It is cooled with water/steam in a closed loop with secondary heat exchangers. The photograph of a unit is shown in Fig. 27-66. These systems are intended for on-site power and heat generation for hospitals, hotels, and small businesses. Another apphcation, however, is as dispersed 5- to 10-MW power plants in metropolitan areas. Such units would be located at elec tric utihty distribution centers, bypassing the high-voltage transmission system. The market entiy price of the system is 3000/kW. As production volumes increase, the price is projec ted to dechne to 1000 to 1500/kW.

While writing this book, the authors felt too hot in the hotel meeting room. Three authors opened the digital thermostat, studied the complex set of buttons, and were unable to make the room any cooler. When we asked a hotel employee, he pointed to the almost invisible switches on the bottom edge of the thermostat and said, First, you should turn this switch to ON, and second, you should turn this switch to COOL. This incident reminded us of two things about inherent safety (Norman, 1988). 

L If a nuclear power plant loses its connection to the offsite load, it must shutdown because it cannot be cutback sufficiently that its electrical output matches its "hotel" load. Outline a PSA study to determine the risk reduction that might be achieved by switching in a dummy load to avoid shutdown and keep the plant online. 

Answer This problem is related to the risk from the Loss of Off-Site Power (LOOP) initiator. It is necessary to determine the risk from LOOP, and the frequency of the LOOP initiator. Correct the LOOP initiator for the frequency that the plant could not have continued operation if it could have been connected to a load. Then a systems analysis of the dummy load systems must be performed to determine its reliability which is used to correct the LOOP initiator. Any risk associated with the dummy load must be added to the LOOP risk. These corrections give the risk change due to not having to shut the plant down when it loses its connection to the power line. Another way to avoid shutting down when the load is lost is with a steam bypass around the turbine so the turbine-generator only supplies enough power for the hotel load. 

Now take another example from the service industry accommodation. There are various categories, such as rented, leased, and purchased. In the rented category there are hotels, inns, guest houses, apartments, etc. It would be inappropriate to compare hotels with guest houses or apartments with inns. They are each in a different class. Hotels are a class of accommodation within which are grades such as 5 star, 4 star, 3 star, etc., indicating the facilities offered. 

Category or rank given to entities having the same functional use but different requirements for quality (ISO 8402) e.g. hotels are graded by star rating, automobiles are graded by model. 

A top-quality London hotel was horrified to find that its house champagne, for which it charged 60 per bottle, lost its bubbles a few moments after it was poured. At first the hotel blamed the suppliers, but...
