This compressed air system had supplied air with undesirable moisture content for a number of years. For several years prior to this incident this small air system was idle. Innovators decided to use compressed, dry air to purge out the moisture and cool down the hot unit after it achieved the appropriate temperature. They first used hoses to connect to a dry air system, and this improvement led to better dew points and longer dryer cycles. The temporary hose system seemed so beneficial that it was replaced with piping. (See Figure 2—20.)...

Purge the hose and regulator of air. Open the cylinder wheel slowly up to full cylinder pressure and then open regulator valve to around 20 psi. Grab the quick-connect DESO stem that is attached to the hose and push down on the center of the stem inside the connection with a stick or small steel rod, to allow the gas to escape. Do this for a few seconds at a time for about ten times. This should be done outdoors so the gas can dissipate and not collect in a confined space. The best way to do this is to add another hose on to the regulator with a on/off valve and use this as a purging valve.

Fast color change developments have recently been made that utilize a two-canister system to apply color-specific powders for automotive applications. While one canister is used for powder coating, the other one is getting ready for the next job. This allows a continuous operation with 8 sec claimed between jobs. Another recent development consists of a color-changing manifold that uses automated valves to control color change. Powders from the different feed hoppers are attached to the manifold. The powder of choice is fed into the manifold that consists of a central channel. Air is used to purge the hose and block between colors, which allows for a color change of usually less than 8 sec. ° ... 

In this system, you can purge with an inert gas by evacuating the system (with a hand or motorized pump) and attaching a hose from one of the stopcock valves, to a two stage regulated bottle of inert gas. Fill the entire system at about two psi. A separate purge valve can be added to the system. Bottled gas can be purchased from any gas supplier such as Merriam-Graves and Pax Air. 

In late 2005, a refinery operator died as he prepared to purge a vessel. He connected a hose from a nitrogen utility station to a vessel that was still pressurized with a pressure higher than the hose rating. The hose burst and the refinery operator was sprayed by a stream of chemicals that contained hydrogen fluoride. This operator was not wearing the specified Class C protective clothing (PPE) for the task. His neoprene jacket was unzipped. He perished from the exposure [6].
