Reference intervals are numerically close to the normal intervals for total T4 or T3. Most automated immunoassay analyzers are capable of performing the THBR and total T4 tests with online calculation of the FT4 index. Theoretically, because the calculated indices are products of T4 or T3 concentrations and a ratio, they have concentration units. However, to avoid confusion with serum T4 or T3, the free hormone index units are usually omitted or termed index units. Typical values are as follows ... 

Such difficulties prompted research workers to look for some other index of NT function in humans. These range from studies on platelets, such as abnormalities in their amine uptake and MAO activity in depressed patients, to changes in the secretion of a hormone known to be controlled by a particular NT. Thus if NA controls growth hormone release, and the secretion of the hormone is changed in depressed patients, does that confirm a role for NA in the mediation of depression ...

The pathologic evaluation of breast lesions serves to establish the histologic diagnosis and to confirm the presence or absence of other factors believed to influence prognosis. These prognostic factors include the presence of necrosis, lymphatic or vascular invasion, nuclear grade, hormone receptor status, proliferative index, amount of aneuploidy, and HER-2/neu expression.

I spent a lot of time wrestling with that one. One day, I recalled an ingenious way of combining measurements developed by two researchers, Drs. Pincus and Hoagland, while studying hormonal function in schizophrenic patients. No single measure set schizophrenics apart from normal patients, so they cooked up a kind of statistical stew, using lymphocyte counts and potassium levels instead of carrots and potatoes. They called it the TRI (Total Response Index). 

TSH, T3, T, T3-resin uptake, free thyroxin index), but careful attention to early signs and symptoms of hypofunction (e.g., weight gain, cold intolerance, hair loss) may be more productive. Thyroid-stimulating hormone is sensitive to early thyroid changes and, if elevated, should prompt treatment with thyroid supplements to avoid goiter or hypothyroidism. 

Figure 16.31 shows a series of toxicological studies33 we have performed on G115. These studies done on five animal species demonstrate that G115 has a very large therapeutic index. Note that neither the cardiovascular system nor the hormonal system is influenced in any way.
