The higher prevalence of tics in males and the exacerbating effects of anabolic steroids suggested the possibility that manipulation of steroid hormones might be helpful in the treatment of TS. Despite some promising case studies (Peterson et ah, 1994), however, a doubleblind, placebo-controlled, crossover study of the androgen receptor blocker flutamide, in 13 adults with TS, failed to find significant benefits (Peterson et al., 1998).

Its use with bradykinin and desmopressin (Zubarev et al., 1994), illustrated as a case study below, shows the benefits of MS sequence analysis. The latter peptide, desmopressin ( Minirin , a neurohypophysial hormone analogue), involves a disulphide link and a C-terminal amide, as well as a non-coded amino-acid residue (Mpa = mercaptopropionic acid) and these features can be identified by chemical sequencing methods (Chapter 5) only with considerable effort. 

Despite the enormous success of biotechnology products to date, much effort continues to be focused on the development of more convenient and noninvasive routes of administration for those products that require frequent and prolonged dosing. Here we present an overview of the technologies, both developed and emerging, which are applicable to protein dehvery. In addition, chapters 11 through 13 detail case studies on physical methods for delivery of insulin and growth hormone.

Many studies have observed low incidences of hormone-dependent cancers, particularly breast cancer, in Asian countries compared with Western countries and it is becoming increasingly accepted that dietary factors play an important role. Although breast cancer can occur in either males or females, only about 1 % of all cases occur in men, and male breast cancer is a rare disease in all parts of the world." Although there appear to be some similar risk factors for breast cancer in males and females, there is no indication in the literature that diet is either a risk or a protective factor for male breast cancer.
