Hoppers inserts

The temperature of the melt downstream from the breaker plate may exceed the front barrel temperature, because of the mechanical work transmitted to the resin by the screw it varies with screw speed and flow rate. The melt temperature is measured by a thermocouple inserted into the melt downstream from the breaker plate. A hooded exhaust placed over the extmder die and feed hopper removes decomposition products when the extmdate is heated. [Pg.376]

Compressed tablets that are composed of several layers require specially adapted presses designed with several fed hoppers. For a two-layer tablet, one granulation is first fed to a die and partially compressed into a soft tablet. The second granulation is added, and the total die components then are compressed fiiUy. Such procedures are used when the tablet ingredients may be incompatible, which requires separate granulations. If needed, a layer of inert ingredient, eg, lactose, is inserted between the two. [Pg.229]

The key to solving these problems is to design the vessel for a mass flow pattern. This involves consideration of both the hopper angle and surface finish, the effect of inserts used to introduce gas and control the soHds flow pattern, and sizing the outlet valve to avoid arching and discharge rate limitations. In addition, the gas or Hquid must be injected such that the soHd particles ate uniformly exposed to it, and flow instabiHties such as fluidization in localized regions are avoided. [Pg.561]

Carson (2002) mentions that inserts have been placed within the hopper to expand the size of the active flow channel and/or to relieve pressure at the discharge. Inverted cones and pyramids have been used with hmited success. He suggests a hopper within a hopper so that material flows in the area between the inner and outer hoppers and through the inner hopper if it does not have a cover on it. By proper design of the geometry of the hopper, a uniform velocity profile can be achieved such that there is a minimum amount of particle segregation. Sometimes in-bin blenders have also been used for this purpose. [Pg.662]

Velocity gradients within bins should also be minimized (60). To achieve this, the hopper must be significantly steeper than the mass flow limit, which may result in an impractically tall bin. Alternate approaches include the use of inserts. However, these must be properly designed and positioned to be effective. Asymmetric bins and hoppers should be avoided, and symmetrical ones should be used whenever possible. Eccentric hoppers should be avoided due to their inherently large velocity gradients. [Pg.147]

More recent measurements have been made by Hopper (Aust. J. sci. Res. A 1948, 1, 369) using several technical refinements. The method cannot however lead to a precise result owing to uncertainty in the value of the viscosity of air. The present position may be summarized as follows. The accepted value of the electronic charge (Bilge, Amer. J. Phys. 1945, 13, 63) is = 1.6020 x 10 C. If we insert this value... [Pg.48]

The six control rods located in the central reflector are not "safety-related" and are inserted only from hot-shutdown or low-power conditions to achieve a cold shutdown. Boronated graphite pellets housed in hoppers above the core provide a reserve shutdown capability. Upon actuation, these pellets drop into channels in selected columns of the active core to provide reactor shutdown in the event that the control rods are inoperable, or if necessary, to provide additional shutdown margin over what may be provided by the control rods located in the hexagonal side reflector. [Pg.256]

Partial disruption of the core could inhibit the insertion of some control rods under this accident situation, causing a local criticality condition as the core cools down, due to the negative temperature coefficient of reactivity of the fuel. Modifications were made to supplement a number of control rods with a facility to inject boron beads from storage hoppers above the core into in-core thimbles. This secondary shutdown system is automatically triggered by differential pressure sensors the beads can be recovered from the thimbles and returned to the hoppers in the event of a spurious operation. [Pg.45]

A cross insert of this type gives considerable support to the flat side faces of the hopper as a structural member. It is, however, necessary to ensure... [Pg.44]

If twin screws are fitted to enhance storage volume, rather than providing a wide outlet for flow, then the capacity can he further enhanced by the use of a central insert ridge between the two, to give a wider base to the hopper section, Fig. 3.7. Although the feeder outlet port is made wider by this technique, the discharging material can be focused by means of an inclined chute at a much lower inclination than that required to stimulate wall slip in the confined flow circumstances within the hopper. This is because flow in the discharge chute is unconfined. [Pg.46]

The extraction pattern of a taper screw feeder can be exploited for simple blending or homogenizing duties, by using a slot hopper with an axially adjustable wall. Moving the wall alters the proportions of ingredients taken from the two compartments. The products are mixed in transit as the screw entrains the second material and delivers the compound to the outlet. A variable plate under a shielded insert allows ingredient proportions to be finely tuned during use. [Pg.150]

The balls are held in the hoppers by gates actuated by two independently powered solenoid latches. Each of these solenoids is on a different d-c power supply, De-energization of both solenoids is required to drop the balls. This can be classed as a parallel fail-safe redundant system two components operate in parallel, and the failure of a single power supply or solenoid will not permit the balls to drop. Failsafe in this instance has a somewhat different meaning than for the VSR system where a similar failure would result in rod insertion. An inadvertent ball drop, howevei presents... [Pg.65]

In a plant with more than one satarator, individual flow meters should be installed in each feed line to permit manual balancing of the flows. Inserted paddle-type flow meters with local indicators would be suitable for this application. Some saturator designs (Section 1.2.2.2) allow salt to fall into the vessel by gravity from an attached hopper and therefore require no instrumentation. Other systems rely on periodic additions of salt to... [Pg.1093]

Two men operated a tree removal service. After cutting down a tree, they removed the branches from the trunk. Then they started feeding tree branches into a chipper pulled behind their dump truck. One man inserted a sizeable branch into the in-feed hopper of the chipper. However, the branch caught the sleeve on his shirt and began pulling him into the hopper. He yelled to his partner. Neither the operator nor his partner could stop the operation quickly because the chipper had no emergency shut-off switches on the hopper. By the time his partner got to the main controls on the engine, the first operator had lost an arm. [Pg.160]
