Salmon homing

Barging salmon down the Columbia and Snake rivers impaired their homing. The fish returned but they did not return upstream to spawn, for unclear reasons. It is possible that they failed to imprint on the home stream when barged. To avoid this problem, spillways are recommended (Lorraine Bodo, American Rivers/Columbia River Alliance). This is reminiscent of trucked reindeer in Sweden (see Section 4.5).

There is concern that oil spills could disrupt the spawning behaviour of anadro-mous species, such as salmon, that live their adult lives in salt water but return to fresh water streams to spawn. Tests have shown that, while salmon will sometimes avoid oil on open water, the exposure to oil may not badly disrupt their homing instinct as they tend to continue on to their freshwater home streams. Experience in actual spills has not been recorded.

Clearly, one of the most spectacular examples of chemosensory orientation is the homing migration of salmon. Because our recent work has indicated that migrating salmon may make use of a variety of orientation mechanisms, they will serve as our model animal for chemosensory orientation.
