This can be seen, for example, in two historical dictionaries of philosophy that represent the state of philosophical discussion at the time when Whitehead enters the scene with Bachelard following soon thereafter. See the entries on Substanz in Michaelis (1907, 607-610) and in Eisler (1904, vol. 2, 450-464). [Pg.358]

Again, the free-text CRF format is useful in that it allows for explicit description of the historical condition, whereas the pre-categorized CRF format omits that detail. However, the free-text list format necessitates coding with a coding dictionary such as MedDRA in order to be useful for analyses. The pre-categorized format is useful here, as only medical history relevant to the investigational therapy can be captured and the cost of additional coding of the history data is eliminated entirely. [Pg.29]

A comprehensive two-volume Handbook of Chemometrics and Qualimetrics has been published by D. L. Massart et al. (1997) and B. G. M. Vandeginste et al. (1998) predecessors of this work and historically interesting are Chemometrics A Textbook (Massart et al. 1988), Evaluation and Optimization of Laboratory Methods and Analytical Procedures (Massart et al. 1978), and The Interpretation of Analytical Chemical Data by the Use of Cluster Analysis (Massart and Kaufmann 1983). A classical reference is still Multivariate Calibration (Martens and Naes 1989). A dictionary with extensive explanations containing about 1700 entries is The Data Analysis Handbook (Frank and Todeschini 1994). [Pg.20]

However, this setback was nothing compared to some historical examples. According to Robert Hendrickson in The Literary Life, British historian Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) had to rewrite the entire first volume of his History of the French Revolution when a maid burned the manuscript, mistaking it for trash. In a fit of rage, the wife of William Ainsworth (1805-1882) tossed the manuscript for his Latin dictionary into the fire, and it took Ainsworth three years to rewrite it. [Pg.188]

University of Paris, Sorbonne (Ingenieur Docteur, 1940). This purpose the present author has thought to achieve by a preliminary survey of the historical background of medical herbalism, followed by an explanation and discussion of the philosophy upon which the herbal practitioner of to-day bases his work. The greater part of the book is devoted to the cyclopaedic dictionary of medicinal and other herbs, with their natural order, botanical and common names and synonyms, their habitats, distinctive features, the parts employed and the therapeutic properties, with uses and dosage. [Pg.2]

Most specialized disciplines have their own specialized jargons, each a lexicon and syntax developed partly to make communication more efficient and partly by historical accident. For convenience, this section lists a number of words and phrases used elsewhere in this book and in the pertinent literature that require special attention. Some such terms will be obscure outside the circle of communicants, some have special meanings or connotations beyond their normal dictionary definitions, and some need particular attention because they are not used consistently in the literature. [Pg.7]

In addition to this historical success in drug discovery, natural products are likely to continue as sources of new commercially viable drug leads. The chemical novelty associated with natural products is higher than that of any other source 40% of the chemical scaffolds in a published database of natural products (Dictionary of Natural Chemistry). This is particularly important when searching for lead molecules against newly discovered targets. Despite commonly held assumptions, natural products can be a more economical source of chemical diversity than the synthesis of equivalent diverse chemicals. [Pg.273]

Since the second edition of this dictionary was published in 1999, Internet search engines have become much more powerful and they complement printed works such as this. Historical material on the chemical industry (before about 1980) is poorly covered on the Internet, although the coverage is improving. Current information on established commercial processes is well covered by the Internet, which is used as a sales tool by process developers, but it needs to be accessed by combinations of keywords. Use of this dictionary to suggest such keywords will shorten the search. Currently active development projects that are monitored by the more ephemeral technical business press are less well documented on the Internet and are most effectively accessed by using the references in this book. [Pg.430]

According to the Oxford English Dictionary the term first appears in 1656 in relation to the diversity of fashion. In the context of crystallography, the first use is generally credited to Mitscherlich (1822, 1823), who recognized different crystal structures of the same compound in a number of arsenate and phosphate salts. The historical development of polymorphism is discussed in Section 1.4. [Pg.2]

The general historian requires a dictionary such as this for reasons which scarcely require discussion - the book is designed precisely to aid in the deciphering and amplification of obscure historical docunvents. [Pg.11]

One of the principal features of this book is that it serves as a reference to some important general terms related to natural products such as alkaloids, caroti-noids, glycoproteins, and snake venoms. Moreover, historical coverage and overview texts, even headings like screening , can be found, indicating that this book is much more than a mere dictionary of natural products. [Pg.758]
