High Pressure Work

Reactions requiring high pressure can be carried out in autoclaves or a small bomb. A recent paper describes a reactor for either vacuum or pressure work (J.Chem.Educ. 71(1994)807). [Pg.46]

Thermodynamics gives limited information on each of the three coefficients which appear on the right-hand side of Eq. (1). The first term can be related to the partial molar enthalpy and the second to the partial molar volume the third term cannot be expressed in terms of any fundamental thermodynamic property, but it can be conveniently related to the excess Gibbs energy which, in turn, can be described by a solution model. It should be noted that the factors of safety mentioned above are not applicable in general to all materials at these temperatures but are chosen with reference to steel and its alloys only. A material such as duralumin, for instance, has a tensile strength at room temperature which compares favorably with that of steel. This aluminum alloy is weakened by an increase in temperature to a much greater degree than steel, however. The most convenient reference electrodes for high-pressure work are Ag/Ag" and Ag/AgCl/Cr electrodes.
