Heroin together

Several CM studies have explored interactions between medication and psychosocial treatments for substance use disorders. Heroin and amphetamine-like compounds (amphetamine, methamphetamine, MDMA or ecstasy, (R,R)(—)-pseudoephedrine (PS-EPH), and (lS,2R)(+)-ephed-rine hydrochloride (EPH-HCl), the last two measured together as total ephedrine) have so far only been detected in airborne particulates in Spain (Tables 5, 6 and 7). Mean heroin concentrations ranged between 10 and 50 pg/m (Table 5), with maximum daily levels reaching 80-90 pg/m. Forensic analysis of street drugs include that of cocaine together with excipients frequently encountered (579), amphetamines 080), and dyes found in heroin samples 081). Heroin, the diacetyl derivative of morphine, is the most important illicit drug derived from the opium poppy. Together with heroin and its metabolites, other synthetic (e.g., methadone, tramadol) and semi-synthetic (e.g., buprenorphine) opioids have been quantified in different biological fluid using HPLC. 

Giving methadone to heroin addicts is a common practice in the Netherlands. A traditional outpatient methadone clinic is based on the traditional treatment philosophy described in Table 3.1. Heroin abuse in West and Central Europe has stablized at 1.4 million. In East Europe levels are higher than in West and Central Europe. Estimates of the number of heroin abusers in Europe as a whole (3.3 million people) are higher than the corresponding estimates for the Americas (1.5 million). The largest numbers of heroin abusers are found in Asia, which accounts for almost half of all heroin use worldwide (5.4 million). Asia and Europe together account for more than three quarters of the world s heroin abuse. 

Similarly, crime networks can be disrupted by identifying the weak links in a criminal commodity chain, or by targeting those actors whose skills are in relatively short supply. For example, in 2000/2001, Australian law enforcement was able to significantly disrupt local heroin trafficking networks by focusing on the relatively small number of brokers who brought together suppliers, financiers, skilled traffickers, and street distributors. This tack would be less successful where the skills needed to conduct the criminal activity, as well as the incentives to do so, are widespread. 

Another synthetic heroin-like compound was sold to heroin-dependent individuals in California in 1982 as "new heroin", which was soon recognized to cause severe Parkinsonian symptoms in young people. Eventually it was discovered that "new heroin" contained pethidine together with an N-methyl-phenyl-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) contaminant. Racemic methadone (13) continues to be used as a maintenance drug in the treatment of addiction to heroin (14).13 Methadone has also been used in treating severe pain.14 The value in using oral racemic methadone is that it also helps to combat the spread of human immunodeficiency virus by reducing injection of heroin.13 Under medical supervision, the addict can lead a more stable life, but there is a temptation to remain on racemic methadone to avoid the withdrawal symptoms known as cold turkey.13 The illegal use of methadone taken together with other drugs such as benzodiazepines...

LSD is a semi-synthetic compound prepared from lysergic acid by A. Hofrnann of Sandoz Co. LSD is the diethylamide derivative of lysergic acid, and is named based on the initials of its German name, Lyserg Saure Diethylamid. LSD has provoked a number of social issues, and is in a group of such alkaloids, together with morphine and its diacetate derivative heroin (Section 1.10), cocaine (Section 3.3), and the stimulants related to ephed-rine (Section 16.1).
