Hepatopancreas

A matrix extract was prepared from poison-free scallop and spiked at the level of 200 ngg of scallop hepatopancreas. The toxins were determined by using LC-MS with calibration employing external standards prepared in methanol. The matrix extract was then spiked further with 300 ngg of each of the toxins and redetermined. The results obtained for each analyte are summarized in Table 5.17 and show that, when using the external calibration method, the values obtained range from 138 to 170 ngg a reduction in accuracy of between 15... [Pg.277]

Occurrence in molluscs of steroidogenesis along a pathway very similar to that found in vertebrates has been claimed. Testosterone (64) - androstenedione (65) interconversion has been demonstrated in gonads of the male and female bivalve - Mytilus edulis [117] and of the gastropod Crepidula fornicata [118], by using labelled testosterone and androstenedione. Moreover, several steroids have been identified in the gonads and hepatopancreas of the opisthobranch... [Pg.105]

In an initial series of experiments, [Me-14C] methionine and [8-14C]adenine were injected into D. verrucosa hepatopancreas. After HPLC isolation, xylosyl-MTA was found consistently labelled in particular, in the experiment with labelled methionine 28.0% of the recovered radioactivity was found associated with xylosyl-MTA, while 12.1% was recovered in the adenosylmethionine... [Pg.107]

Tests show that the presence of soil reduces the toxicity of copper to the soil-dwelling nematode Caenorhabditis elegans copper toxicity to nematodes increases with increasing densities of bacteria and increasing concentrations of sodium chloride or potassium chloride (Donkin and Dusenbery 1993). Terrestrial isopods efficiently assimilate and store copper as detoxihed granules in the hepatopancreas this activity is in contrast to many species of marine crustaceans that are unable to assimilate, detoxify, or otherwise regulate copper (Weeks and Rainbow 1993). [Pg.178]

Median BCF values in aquatic biota exposed to various concentrations of Pb+2 for 14 to 140 days varied from about 42 in fish to 2570 in mussels intermediate values were 536 for oysters, 500 for insects, 725 for algae, and 1700 for snails (USEPA 1985). There are several notable exceptions to this array significantly higher values have been reported in crustacean hepatopancreas (Heyraud and Cherry 1979), in various species of freshwater invertebrates (Spehar et al. 1978), in fish bone (Demayo et al. 1982) and liver (Haux and Larsson 1982), and in whole oysters (Zaroogian et al. 1979). In oysters, for example, BCF values varied from 3450 to 6600 after exposure to solutions... [Pg.289]
