If feeding behaviors, assimilation efficiency, or fitness are reasonable proxies for tolerance of secondary metabolites, then it is clear that herbivore individuals, populations, and species profoundly vary in their tolerance (Paul et al. 2001 Stachowicz 2001 Targett and Arnold 2001). Such differential tolerance was recognized early within the emerging field of marine plant-herbivore interactions (Hay 1992 Hay and Steinberg 1992 Paul 1992), much to the dismay of these scholars. The same metabolite may show considerable difference in its effects even on closely related species of herbivores (Paul 1992). 

Many of the deleterious metabolic or chronic effects of plant allelochemlcals may be due to these Interactions. Many of the types of Interactions discussed In vertebrate nutrition literature may also be Important in insect dietetics (14). Certain allelochemlcals structurally resemble essential nutrients closely enough to compete metabolically (35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40). Allelochemlcals may block the bloavallablllty of nutrients by reducing assimilation, efficiency of conversion of assimilated food, or the efficiency of conversion of ingested food (, 44, 46). 

Relatively great assimilation efficiencies, in addition to the measured tissue distribution of PFAs in fish, are supportive of the idea that enterohepatic recirculation may be an important factor limiting PFA depuration. The greatest concentrations of PFAs in tissues are measured in the blood > kidney > liver > gall bladder [68]. The tissue distribution of fish corresponds well with the observed tissue distribution in eagles (Table 16). Evidence of enterohepatic recirculation in rats has been demonstrated to affect the rate of elimination for PFAs [71]. 

The nitrogen flow model was tested for sensitivity to varying the "biological parameters" of filter-feeder electivity and assimilation efficiency.
