Hepatocellular recurrence

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) develops in patients with chronic liver diseases associated with hepatitis B and hepatitis C vims infections with high incidences. Here, an acyclic retinoid has been shown to suppress the posttherapeutic recurrence after interferon-y or glycerrhicin treatment in cirrhotic patients who underwent curative treatment of preceding tumors. The retinoid induced the disappearance of serum lectin-reactive a-fetoprotein (AFP-L3), a tumor marker indicating the presence of unrecognizable tumors in the remnant liver, suggesting a deletion of such minute (pre)malignant clones (clonal deletion). As a molecular mechanism of the clonal deletion, a novel mechanism of... [Pg.1076]

Benign liver tumours may develop when synthetic C17-a-substituted gonadal steroids (e.g. anabolic steroids usually in high dose, and oral contraceptives) are used for more than 5 years there is also increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma, although the absolute risk of either complication is very low. These liver tumours are highly vascular and may cause recurrent or acute abdominal pain if they rupture and bleed. [Pg.654]

The first clinical trial on MW ablation therapy was published hy Seki et al. (1994). In 18 patients suffering from single unresectable hepatocellular cancer (HCC) smaller than 2 cm, up to 4 MW ablations were performed for treatment. No serious complications were encountered, and no local recurrence was noted in follow-up over 11-22 months. Three patients developed new tumors in sites remote from the treated sites. [Pg.27]
