Naphthalenesulfonic Acid—Formaldehyde Condensates. In addition to the nitrile and alcohol routes for fatty amine preparation, processes have been described by Unocal and Pennwalt Corporation, using an olefin and secondary amine (14—16) by Texaco Inc., hydrogenation of nitroparaffins (17—20) by Onyx Corporation, reaction of an alkyl haUde with secondary amines (21,22) by Henkel Cie, GmbH, reduction of an ester in the presence of a secondary amine (23) by catalytic hydroammonolysis of carboxyhc acids (24) and by the Hofmann rearrangement (25). 

World production ia the late 1990s of both natural and synthetic forms of vitamin E is estimated at 22,000 metric tons and growth is expected to keep pace with increasing need. The 1993 U.S. production was 14,096 metric tons (47) with an additional 1080 metric tons from imports. The principal U.S. producers of the natural form are Eastman Chemical Company, Archer Daniels Midland Company, and Henkel, and of synthetic vitamin E, Hoffmaim-La Roche and BASE. International producers include Hoffmaim-La Roche, BASE, Eisai, and Rhc ne-Poulenc. 

In 1991, ia addition to Henkel (now including Emery), commercial producers of dimer acids ia the U.S. were Arizona Chemical, Schering Berlin, Humko Chemical Division of Witco, and Union Camp Corporation. There are other producers throughout the world. 

Alkyl phosphates, also coco based, are formed by the reaction of fatty alcohol with phosphorous pentoxide. The product is a mixture of monoesters and diesters. Its sodium salt (MAP) is reportedly mild and is used in facial wash, such as Kao s Biore. Other uses are as antistatics in textile auxiliaries, corrosion inhibitors, surfactant additives for extreme pressure (EP) lubricants, and surfactant components in alkali and acid cleaners. Coco-based alkyl polyglycosides (APG) have been successfully produced and marketed by Henkel in the United States. The alkyl polyglycoside fuUy satisfies the demand for a mild surfactant and is completely biodegradable.

As a form of medical intervention, psychopharmacology is considered a relatively new intervention with its roots planted only in the last 40 to 4S years.
