Binding of C02 Most of the carbon dioxide produced in metabolism is hydrated and transported as bicarbonate ion (see p. 9). However, some CO2 is carried as carbamate bound to the uncharged a-amino groups of hemoglobin (carbamino-hemo-globin see Figure 3.7), which can be represented schematically as follows ... 

The binding of C02 stabilizes the T (taut) or deoxy form of hemo globin, resulting in a decrease in its affinity for oxygen (see p. 28). In the lungs, C02 disassociates from the hemoglobin, and is released in the breath. 

Correct answer = B. The cyclic heme molecule is oxidatively cleaved to form biliverdin. The catabolism occurs in the cells of the reticulo endothelial system, particularly the spleen, and results in the liberation of carbon monoxide. Protoporphyrinogen is an intermediate in the synthesis, not degradation, of heme. Hemo globin and tissue cytochromes are precursors of bilirubin. 

The rate of electron tunneling in the topologically similar [Zn hemo-globin/Fe(III) cyt b5 complex was found to be 8 x 103 s 1 [268], Note that this is an example of electron transfer within the protein complex formed between two physiological redox partners Zn-substituted hemoglobin and cytochrome b5 [269].

Human hemoglobin consists of four subunits each of them having one iron atom in the oxygen binding site. What is the distance between the iron atoms in oxy-hemo-globin As in the case of parvalbumin only the resonant crossterm f I (h) could be measured and used for this purpose. Therefore any answer concerning iron—iron distances could be found in an indirect way only...

Globin is the protein part of the conjugated protein hemo-globin of the blood. 

Hemo-globin is the conjugated iron-protein constituent of red blood corpuscles or really of the coloring matter of the corpuscles.

Both types of 02-metal complexes are known to exist in vitro model systems (for ref. see Ref.197,197al). An unequivocal decision about the real structure of 02-hemo-globin and 02-myoglobin has not been reached because some studies favor the Pauling-structure199, 200 other data the Griffith-structure197,201 ... 

The evidence that ceruloplasmin (Cp) (E.C. 1.12.3,1) is a direct molecular link between copper and iron metabolism is summarized. Copper deficiency results in low plasma Cp and iron, reduced iron mobilization, and eventually anemia, even with high iron storage in the liver. Cp controls the rate of iron uptake by transferrin. Transferrin plays a key role in the availability of iron for the biosynthesis of hemo-globin in the reticulocytes. The ferroxidase activity of Cp results in the reduction of free iron ion generating a conr centration gradient from the iron stores to the capillary system, thus promoting a rapid iron efflux in the reticuloendothelial system. It has been confirmed both in vivo and in the perfused liver that lOr M Cp specifically induces a rapid rise in plasma iron.
