Hecker effect

The chemical aspect of the Hecker effect was analyzed by Melrose et al. [17]. Kuhn and Argoul [18,19] found that the growth morphology is very sensitive to small chemical perturbations, for example, pH changes, the presence of small amounts of oxygen, and minute quantities of alkali metal ions. Fleury et al. [20] studied the role of impurities and their dynamic behavior.

This proposed process may explain the hydrogen-assisted NO dissociation first proposed by Hecker and Bell (89). Several consensus sequence sites for phosphorylation by protein kinases A and C (PKC) and calmodulin kinase II are found in all of the cloned NOS isoforms however, the functional relevance of these sites has not been fully elucidated. It has, however, been demonstrated that the endothelial NOS undergoes phosphorylation following cell stimulation with receptor-dependent and -independent agonists (Robinson eta/., 1995), a phenomenon that could be completely inhibited by the calmodulin antagonist W-7 (Michel et al., 1993). PKC has also been reported to modulate NOS activity in cultured endothelial cells such that inhibition of PKC enhanced basal and agonist-stimulated NOS activity, whereas activation of PKC attenuated the release of NO (Hecker et al., 1993a Davada et al., 1994). It is unclear, however, whether the effects of such interventions reflect an effect of PKC on NOS itself, similar to the reported inhibition of brain NOS (Bredt et al.,... 

This distribution of fatty acids is also of some interest to nutritionists as the effects of fatty acids in rats can be modified by redistributing the fats by interesterification (Mukherjee and Sengupta, 1981). As much as 40% of the dietary fat consumed in the Federal German Republic in recent years has been subjected to transesterification processes such as described by Perron and Broncy (1978) and Monseigny eta/. (1979). This makes surveys of composition of edible fats rather difficult in terms of fatty acids (Heckers and Melcher, 1978), and enforces the examination of unsaponifiable materials to discover the original oil composition (Strocchi, 1981).

Tumour promoters, the most widely studied of which are the phorbol esters (Hecker 1975), have been demonstrated to stimulate superoxide anion radical production (Goldstein et al. 1979). 12-0-Tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate treatment of pro-Hferating murine epidermal keratinocytes (MEK) cultured in low Ca medium resulted in (i) an initial suppression of prohferation, (ii) the accelerated detachment and differentiation of detached MEKs and (iii) a suppression of catalase induction in the detached population (Reiners etal. 1990). Induction of MEK differentiation by raising the medium Ca concentration resulted in a rapid inhibition of cell division and 200 % increases in per cell catalase activities. Addition of 12-0-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate immediately prior to Ca shift completely suppressed the Ca -dependent increases in activity. However, the addition of 12-0-tetradecanoyl-phorbol-13-acetate 48 h after the induction of differentiation by Ca shift had no effects on the elevated, pre-existing catalase activities. Per cell catalase activities varies in vivo with the stage of MEK differentiation.
