Heart attacks preventing

The concentration of t-PA in human blood is 2—5 ng/mL, ie, 2—5 ppb. Plasminogen activation is accelerated in the presence of a clot, but the rate is slow. The dissolution of a clot requites a week or more during normal repair of vascular damage (17). Prevention of irreversible tissue damage during a heart attack requires that a clot, formed by mpture of an atherosclerotic plaque, be dissolved in a matter of hours. This rapid thrombolysis (dissolution of the clot) must be achieved without significant tibrinogenolysis elsewhere in the patient. [Pg.44]

The understanding of these actions of aspirin started in 1971 (45) and resulted in the recommendations of the medical community that small doses of aspirin, used under the care of the doctor, may be a prevention measure for heart attack, and stroke for those considered at risk in the population. Further reported work may expand health benefits to prevention of certain kinds of cancer (46). [Pg.292]

Coumarin/warfarin, given at a typical dosage of 4 to 5 mg/day, prevents the deleterious formation in the bloodstream of small blood clots and thus reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes for individuals whose arteries contain sclerotic plaques. Taken in much larger doses, as for example in rodent poisons, Coumarin/warfarin can cause massive hemorrhages and death. [Pg.254]

Major outcomes in high-risk hypertensive patients randomized to angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor or calcium channel blocker vs. diuretic The Antihypertensive and Lipid-Lowering Treatment to Prevent Heart Attack Trial (ALLHAT). JAMA 2002 288(23) =2981-2997. [Pg.31]

Anticoagulants are substances that can prevent blood from clotting and, hence, are of therapeutic use in cases where a high risk of coagulation is diagnosed. They are often administered to patients with coronary heart disease and to patients who have experienced a heart attack or... [Pg.340]

From a clinical point of view, muscle diseases are not as common as stroke or heart attack, but they occur in all age groups and can cause serious physical disability. Their impact is especially severe when children and young adults are affected. Some muscle diseases respond well to medical treatment, while many of the physical disabilities can be improved or prevented. There are... [Pg.2]

Along with the production of insulin, many other medical uses have been achieved for recombinant DNA. This includes the production of erythropoetin, a hormone used to stimulate production of red blood cells in anemic people tissue plasminogen activator, an enzyme that dissolves blood clots in heart attack victims and antihemophilic human factor VIII, used to prevent and control bleeding for hemophiliacs. These three important genetically engineered proteins were all cloned in hamster cell cultures. [Pg.333]

Metoprolol is nsed in moderate hypertension, serions conditions of myocardial infarction, for preventing death of cardiovascular tissue, in angina, tachycardia, extrasystole, and for secondary prophylaxis after a heart attack. The most common synonyms are lopresor, betaloc, and others. [Pg.165]

Prostacyclin (PGIj, 622) appears to play an important role in preventing stroke, thrombosis, and heart attack 361362) this substance is very unstable... [Pg.53]

Although development and clinical expression of coronary heart disease (CHD) are determined by the interaction of numerous risk factors, lowering blood cholesterol is the major approach to prevention and suppression of heart disease, the number one cause of death in Western society. The risk of CHD is directly proportional to blood cholesterol levels (Fig. 23.1), and a lowering of cholesterol, specihcally LDL cholesterol, deceases the incidence of heart attacks. [Pg.269]

Major cardiovascular events in hypertensive patients randomized to doxazosin vs chlorthalidone the antihypertensive and lipid-lowering treatment to prevent heart attack trial (ALLHAT). ALLHAT Collaborative Research Group. )AMA 2000 283 1967-1975. [Pg.399]

Some side effects, or adverse effects, of drugs can be fatal. Adverse drug reactions are one of the top 10 causes of death in hospitalized patients in the United States—as many as 100,000 deaths per year Even aspirin at low doses, recommended to prevent heart attacks and stroke, can kill under the right conditions Fatal bleeding can occur in patients who have an undetected clotting disorder and take aspirin r ularly. [Pg.55]

Inhibitors of the blood clotting factor thrombin would in principle prove useful in preventing inappropriate clot formation that potentially leads to stroke and heart attack. Reaction of the carboxylic acid (56-2) with thionyl chloride leads to the corresponding acid chloride (56-3). Treatment of that intermediate with the substituted pyridyl amine (56-1) leads to the amide (56-4). Catalytic hydrogenation of (56-4) reduces the nitro group to the primary amine (56-5). Condensation of that ortho-diamine with the carboxyhc acid (56-6) in the presence of carbonyl diimidazole... [Pg.417]
