Hazardous wastes remediation design

For this study, a bi-phasic bioreactor design was utilized, operating in a semi-continuous flow process, having a hydraulic retention time of four days. Groundwater, with contaminant concentrations as high as 7000 ppm creosote, was treated on-site. This demonstration achieved a removal efficiency of greater than 99% for total polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This includes a removal rate of 98% for the most recalcitrant, and most hazardous fraction of the PAHs, and 88% for PCP. The field test proved that biotechnology application for hazardous waste remediation can be effective at an actual waste site. [Pg.197]

Tlie Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) of 1980 was tire first major response to tire problem of abandoned hazardous waste sites throughout the nation. CERCLA was the begiiming of tlie remediation of hazardous waste sites. This program was designed to ... [Pg.41]

The design and construction requirements, as defined in the RCRA regulations, may also be applied under cleanup programs, such as Superfund31 or state cleanup programs, as part of a remedy for hazardous waste sites such as abandoned dumps. In these instances, the RCRA regulations for conventional covers are usually identified as applicable or relevant and appropriate requirements for the site. [Pg.1061]

Leo Weitzman received his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Purdue University. He is a consultant with 30 years of experience in the development, design, permitting, and operation of equipment and facilities for treating hazardous wastes and remediation debris. Dr. Weitzman has extensive experience in the disposal of hazardous waste and contaminated materials by thermal treatment, chemical reaction, solvent extraction, biological treatment, and stabilization. He has published over 40 technical papers... [Pg.173]

As clarification of SARA Title III and CERCLA relationships, the following is provided. The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) is designed to help clean up inactive hazardous waste sites. It also requires industries to disclose to their communities what hazardous substances they use and store. CERCLA authorized EPA to remediate polluted sites and created the Superfund to pay for site cleanups when there is no clear-cut responsible party. EPA can pursue potentially responsible parties to make them pay for response and remediation activities. Section 313 of the Emergency Planning Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986 (SARA Title III) requires EPA to establish an inventory of routine toxic... [Pg.294]

The Halcrow Group based in London does seismic-hazard analysis, design, and remediation. It also does earthquake site response analysis and liquefaction assessment and remediation. It has done site evaluations for nuclear power plants, dams, and intermediate level nuclear waste stors e. It is a large company with 8,000 employees and many interests. [Pg.541]

The dioxin was traced to a solvent that was reacting to form dioxin. The solvent was replaced with an equally effective solvent and no dioxin was produced. This solution is superior to treating the waste water. The solution also represents a canon in the chemical process industries Design for zero emissions, rather than design to comply with regulations. In this way you anticipate new regulations. Instead of working to remedy environmental hazards, don t contaminate in the first place. [Pg.57]
