Harmful energy

Radioactive wastes are waste materials that consist of unstable isotopes. Over time, the materials decay to a more stable form (or element) emitting potentially harmful energy in the process. [Pg.464]

Barrier analysis includes determining whether or not the barrier failed, if a barrier was provided and used. If a barrier was provided but not used, the analysis then seeks to identify the task performance errors which caused the barrier not to be used (Fig. 18-12). This process is used to evaluate barriers on the energy source, between the energy source and the persons and/or objects to be protected, or on the target person or object. The same process is also used if the barrier evaluated consists of separating the potential targets from potentially harmful energy flows or environments by time or space. [Pg.227]

When we refer to hazardous situations, we mean a person is confronted with environment factors which lead him to anticipate threatening conditions. In the hazardous situation itself, interactions take place, which we refer to as "dangers". A danger can be described as the interaction between the hazard carriers man and object, in which harmful energy may be transfered. An encounter between the hazard carriers man and object would result in an accident. [Pg.10]

Harmful energy can in fact be released due to any of a number of reasons in any case, disturbances can occur during the work process, which may result in the development of critical situations. These demand that the person who takes action react in a specific manner, in order to get a critical situation under control again or to keep the consequences at a minimum. Perceptual processes of the type mentioned constitute a basis for further phases of action in hazardous situations judgements and assessments, decisions and choice of actions. These serve as points of orientation, support directed search activities and help verify completed actions. The development of so-called photodynamic therapy uses lasers for treatment of cancer. The patient is injected with a substance called hematoporphyrin derivative [68335-15-9] which is preferentially localized in cancerous tissues. The patient is later irradiated with laser light, often with a dye laser at a wavelength around 630 nm. The light energy catalyticaHy photooxidizes the hematoporphyrin derivative, releasing materials which kill the nearby cancerous tissue. Normal tissue which did not retain the chemical is not harmed. Photodynamic therapy offers promise as a new form of cancer treatment. [Pg.16]

In this context the term hazard is taken to mean "potential to cause harm," and would include any substance or plant item with characteristics such as toxicity, flammability, high voltage, mechanical energy, or asphyxiation potential. [Pg.209]

Economic concerns differ sharply from those of natural scientists and engineers. The most critical difference is in the outlook towards supply development. Many economists argue that market forces allow smooth adjustments to whatever happens to the physical stock of resources. Potentially, these market forces can produce resources cheaper than other methods presently employed to cause adjustments. At worst, the cost rises will be gradual and manageable. And unlike other sectors of the economy that can easily switch to cleaner natural gas or electricity, automobiles, trucks, nonroad vehicles, and buses are powered by internal-combustion engines burning petroleum products that produce carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons. Efforts are under way to accelerate the introduction of electric, fuel-cell, and hybrid (electric and fuel) vehicles to replace sonic of these vehicles in both the retail marketplace and in commercial, government, public transit, and private fleets. These vehicles dramatically reduce harmful pollutants and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 50 percent or more compared to gasoline-powered vehicles. [Pg.479]
