Green industrial motivation

Fourth, one needs not go so far as to fear a green-industrial complex to recognize that even environmental activists can find activism to be a lucrative enterprise (O Neill, 2009). That is, economic incentives can influence the behavior of environmentalists, too. No one can doubt that former U.S. Vice President A1 Gore, Jr., to take one example, has experienced considerable financial gain as a result of his environmental initiatives. In the same way we allow that the economic advocates are not automatically motivated by environmental animus, we must also allow until proven otherwise that the environmental advocates are not automatically against financial benefit.

To understand the motivations of this accident, within the frame of the general context of green/sustainable chemistry, it is necessary to clarify first the industrial context of the accident, and in particular the plant problems that are the effective precursors to disaster. The first observation is that the alpha-naphthol plant was shut down and thus SEVIN production was no longer profitable, and the plant run intermittently. The most recent motivation for the use of surfactant-based reaction media relates to the Green Chemistry discussion. It is generally recommended to use water instead of an organic solvent that could be harmful to the environment. Since water is non-toxic and inflammable, it is regarded as the ideal solvent. Methods for water purification after industrial use are well established and available in industrial scale. 

The chemical industry is broad, and it would not be possible to adequately cover all the areas here. However, some representative examples illustrate the earlier concepts and provide incentive for future work. The solvents presently used in chemical reactions and processes were chosen based upon on performance criteria, including optimal yield, chemical reactivity and selectivity. Each industry or chemical sector must determine how the regulatory, economic and technological drivers affect their solvent supply in the near and far term, and motivate them to use green solvents. 

The LCA is cotton-centric, meaning it does not compare the environmental impact of cotton to competitive fibers.
