Canned and Semimoist Foods. Canned and dry foods are nutritionally comparable on a moisture-free basis. Some canned foods are basically dry foods to which gravy, moisture, and flavor enhancers have been added. Almost all animals tend to prefer moist foods to dry, and canned foods are desirable for geriatric dogs and cats, particularly those having gum and dental deterioration. Canned foods can be gulped by dogs and consumed quickly by cats. [Pg.149]

StmcturaHy related to nitrofurantoias are Dantrolene [7261-97-4] (38), a peripherally acting muscle relaxant, and its analogues (39), which can be used as an antidote against succiaylcholine-iaduced myopathy and ia autoimmune myasthenia gravis therapy (136,137). [Pg.258]

Example of an HACCP System. The HACCP system can be used to ensure production of a safe cooked, sHced turkey breast with gravy, which has been vacuum packaged in a flexible plastic pouch and subjected to a final heat treatment prior to distribution (37). Raw turkey breasts are trimmed, then injected with a solution containing sodium chloride and sodium phosphate. Next, the meat is placed into a tumbler. After tumbling, the meat is stuffed into a casing, placed onto racks, and moved into a cook tank, where it is cooked to an internal temperature of at least 71.1°C (160°F). After... [Pg.33]

The anainoacridines, tacrine (19) and its 1-hydroxy metaboUte, velnacrine (20), are reversible inhibitors of AChE. Tacrine was synthesi2ed in the 1940s and has been used clinically for the treatment of myasthenia gravis and tardive dyskinesia (115). Placebo-controUed studies have indicated modest efficacy of tacrine to treat AD dementia (122,123) and in 1993 the dmg was recommended for approval by the PDA under the trade name Cognex. Tacrine (19) has been shown to interact with sites other than AChE, such as potassium channels (124) and muscarinic receptors. However, these interactions are comparatively weak and are not thought to contribute to the biological activity of the dmg at therapeutic levels (115). [Pg.98]

Autoantibodies are directed against nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in myasthenia gravis, resulting in receptor loss, skeletal muscle paralysis, and dysfunction (100). In addition, antibodies directed against voltage-gated Ca " channels produce similar neuromuscular dysfunction of Lambert-Eaton... [Pg.282]

Used in baked goods (breads, cakes, cookies, snack items), pasta products, infant formulas, milk replacers, emulsified and coarsely ground meat items, meat analogues, dietary foods, and soup mixes and gravies. [Pg.303]

Starch monophosphates are quite useful in foods because of their superior freeze—thaw stabiUty. As thickeners in frozen gravy and frozen cream pie preparations, they are preferred to other starches. A pregelatinized starch phosphate has been developed (131) which is dispersible in cold water, for use in instant dessert powders and icings and nonfood uses such as core binders for metal molds, in papermaking to improve fold strength and surface characteristics, as a textile size, in aluminum refining, and as a detergent builder. [Pg.346]

Lighdy derivatized starch acetates are employed in food because of the clarity of their gels and their stabiHty. AppHcations include frozen fmit pies and gravies, baked goods, instant puddings, and pie fillings. Starch acetates are used in textiles as warp sizes and in paper to improve printabiHty, surface strength, and solvent resistance. [Pg.346]

Uses. Inactive dried yeasts are used as iagredients ia many formulated foods baby foods, soups, gravies, and meat extenders as carriers of spice and smoke flavors and ia baked goods. Yeasts used ia the health food iadustry are geaeraHy fortified with minerals and contain higher concentrations of the B vitamins, especially thiamin, riboflavin, and niacia (see Vitamins). [Pg.394]

Commercially available yeast extracts are made from brewers yeast, from bakers yeast, from alcohol-grown yeast (C. utilis) and from whey grown yeast (K fragilis). Extracts are used ia fermentation media for productioa of antibiotics, ia cheese starter cultures, and ia the productioa of viaegar. They are also exteasively used ia the food iadustry as condiments to provide savory flavors for soups, gravies and bouillon cubes, and as flavor intensifiers ia cheese products. [Pg.394]

A slurry of the starch is cooked in the presence of a heat-stable bacterial endo-a-amylase. The enzyme hydrolyzes the a-l,4-glycosidic bonds in pregelatinized starch, the viscosity of the gel rapidly decreases, and maltodextrins are produced. The process may be terrninated at this point. The solution is purified and dried, and the maltodextrins are utilized as blandtasting functional ingredients in dry soup mixes, infant foods, sauces and gravy mixes, etc. [Pg.296]

The relative inaccessibility of physostigmine led to molecular dissection studies to define the parts of the molecule necessary for activity. A surprisingly simple derivative of m-hydroxy-aniline, neostigmine (40), proved to have the same activity as the complex heterocyclic molecule. In addition, this drug has found use as a cholinsterase inhibitor in pathologic conditions such as myasthenia gravis, marked by insufficient muscle tone. Reaction of m-dimethylaminophenol (37) witn pnosgene affords tne... [Pg.113]

The solubility of water vapor in ionic liquids is of interest because ionic liquids are extremely hygroscopic. In addition, the solubility of water vapor in ILs is an excellent test of the strength of molecular interactions in these fluids. By using the gravi-... [Pg.86]
