Gravure painting

Early fluorescent pigments were promoted and adopted for use in screen inks for poster boards and paints for safety applications. These thermoset pigments were not well-suited because of their poor fightfastness. Also, because of their relatively coarse particle size, their use in thinner film applications, such as gravure or flexo, was limited.

Thermoplastic polyamides are used in coatings to modify alkyd resins (qv) in thixotropic systems (238) and to plasticize nitroceUulose lacquers (239). DETA-taH oil fatty acid-based polyamides are suggested for use as corrosion inhibitors in alkyd paints (240). Printing inks for fiexo-gravure appHcation on certain paper, film and foil webs rely on EDA- and PDA-based polyamides for their specific performance (241). 

Even more widely used are a variety of roller-coating techniques. In forward roller coating a controlled amount of paint is metered onto the surface of a rubber or gelatine roller rotating such that, at its point of contact with the sheet or web, roller and sheet are moving in the same (forward) direction. Even finer control of thin coatings is obtained if the paint is transferred from gravure cells onto the application roller.

Commercially available P.O.46 types are usually quite transparent. They are employed primarily in packaging printing inks, also in offset and metal deco printing. Publication gravure inks, plastics, especially PVC, LDPE, and elastomers, as well as general industrial paints are suitable media for pigment application. P.O.46 is less solvent resistant than P.R.53 1, but it is faster to alkali and acid. In terms of lightfastness, P.O.46 performs poorly 1/3 and 1/25 SD prints equal only step 1 on the Blue Scale. 

Plastic parts can be post-finished in a number of ways. Film and sheet can be post-embossed with textures and letterpress, gravure, or silk screening can print them.
