A variety of other practical implementations of optical SPR have been demonstrated, including the use of metal-coated diffraction gratings, optical fibers, planar waveguides and even metal colloids.

Comparable behavior has been observed by Payer et al. in a series of subpicosecond transient grating optical Kerr effect measurements on the reorientation of byphenyl molecules in neat biphenyl and n-heptane solutions [66,67]. They have shown that on the ultrafast timescale (r < 2 ps) the dynamics of the probe is controlled by librational motions having an inertial character, although diffusive reorientational relaxation of the whole molecule and internal torsional motions can also have a role. 

An alternative microfabrication technique is based on replication moulding. An elastomer is patterned by curing on a micromechanical mold. This technique is termed soft lithography , and is used to make blazed grating optics, stamps for chemical patterning and microfluidics devices. Soft fithography is essentially a subtractive method. 

A DAD in static mode, when used as a stand-alone spectrometer, has slightly less sensitivity than a conventional scanning-monochromator spectrometer based on grating optics. The DAD can collect usable spectra at around 0.001 absorbance units (AU) fuU scale. For certain compounds with a number of intense and narrow bands, such as the PAHs, this may be even lower because the pattern of bands is so distinct. Since the spectra of many compounds have only one or two broad bands, the higher value would be the typical Hmit. In the dynamic mode used with HPLC, the Hmit for useful diagnostic spectra is around 0.01 AU, with 0.002 AU to 0.004 AU being the Hmit for most PAHs.
